thefts in the triad area

so whats the deal with all the theft going on around here? (i'm in high point, NC) If you get on craigslist there is almost 2 or 3 posts daily for people having things stolen.
Last week my Moped was stolen! Along with atleast 3 or 4 other folks I have talked to. are they just stealing to steal? They dont have the keys to mine. I have called every moped dealer in the area as well as other key makers and no one will make keys for mopeds. so do they have their own key maker and blanks?
Mopeds arent really worth anything at the scrap yard are they? mine was 90% plastic. so i wouldnt think so.
i filled out a police report, but cops dont do anything about theft these days. so i wont bank a recovery from them.
I am fairly new to the area, so if anyone has any info or suggestions as to what I should do to find it, please let me know!

Its the damn economy and the increase in theft is on the rise everywhere. Just Monday night I had the crime prevention officer attend out homeowners meeting and she said there has been a huge increase of petty thefts and they attributed it to the slumping economy and unemployment rate.
