..have I told you how much I hate them? This morning as my car is outside warming up (yes I know...it's against the law and I probably had this coming :shaking:) someone decides to take my '06 Corolla out of my driveway for a little joy ride. Luckily, the car has been recovered and is on it's way to be fingerprinted. And I learned today, that there are two people in my community, one who lives across the street from me, who have been charged with stealing cars in the past. Sooooo...with all that said, my day is ruined, and I truly feel the need to hit something. Needless to say, I'm not going to be warming up my car in the cold anymore.

Thanks for letting me vent....

get a remote start, as soon as the brake is hit, they turn off.. Problem solved

Also your car can stay locked.

Yeah...I didn't think of that either. But I guess if they wanted to steal it badly enough, they'd just break the window. We're going to look at remote starts for both of our cars. Hopefully it won't be too terribly expensive.

just get a Dog, that will sit next to it while it idles.. bet they will not try then :)

I let mine idle with dogs walking around it, keeping an eye out :)

It's illegal to let you car warm up on a cold morning? oops...

Yeah...evidently in Mecklenburg County, it is illegal to let your car warm up in the driveway in front of your own house. You can get fined for it.

If I can get either one of my dogs to sit that long..I'do that in a heart beat! :)

X2 - People generally dont like to get acquainted with decent sized dogs to get to your stuff.

i bet you would feel like an idiot if you tried the dog method, and someone stole the dogs...

"well officer they were guarding my car so i wouldn't be cold"

WTF!?

I have never heard of such garbage. I let me truck idle for 10-15 minutes on cold mornings.

say what? Is this an anti-idling emmissions deal?
No, its a "we can't stop the criminals so we're going to stop you because you put up less of a fight and are more likely to follow the law anyway because we're a bunch of spineless SOB's" deal.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! That's what the officers told me too...in a nicer way though...

Fastest way to warm up the engine is to drive it. Idling is a waste. I disagree with a law saying so, but agree with the principle of not doing it.

Driving two miles down the street gets it warmer than sitting 10 min in your driveway. On a fifteen 15-20 min commute, i can deal with being cold those first 3-4 min. gets some gloves and a hat.

Careful locking the doors, My sister cut the car on to let it warm.... and picked up what she thought was the remote to the locks, ended up being the remote to the radio... The car was already locked.... and all the keys in her car....oopps

The reason you let your car idle on a cold morning is to warm the engine oil to reduce wear. The secondary effect is that you get warmer too. Driving it to warm it up will warm YOU up faster also, but it defeats the whole purpose.

shit.. the reason I warm it up is so I can walk back inside, pour my coffee, get the kids in their coats and shoes and then have a a warm vehicle to sit in. 246K miles I'm not too concerned with the wear at this point. :D

This is true, but it takes 5-1/2 miles, 7 minutes for my car to warm up, which is useless if the windshield is covered in fog or frost. The cold doesn't bother my body, but I like visibility.

I let mine warm up a little, but it seems to warm up nicely after driving the 1st 2 miles in 1st gear...:driver:

...Work truck, by the way.:flipoff2:

that really sucks... but seriously, remote start is in your future..... doors will stay locked as mentioned.... ignition will be cut once the brake is pressed to shift from park if the key isn't in the igntion, as stated.... and it's really not that expensive.... $200 or so install last i checked for an auto.... 5 speed remote start is a bit more.

Can't have nothing these days, my DD has been broken into 3 times near UNCC (causing me to replace CD player, passenger side window.....twice, $200-$300 in tools and a toolbox). Talked to a ex-cop and found out its illegal to do anything about it like wait in the shadows w/ a gun (even if unloaded) or rig an electric circuit that'd shock the piss out of anybody that bumped it.....only way is to spend more $$$ to protect your own stuff

xwhatever on the remote start

That stinks, Marty! Glad you got it back, though...

Do they make block heaters for a gas engine?
takes me about 2 miles at around 45 mph no matter what I am driving before I feel heat. If I let it warm up, takes a little less

yep and hose heaters to and they work good. thats the only way to go up north and out west when it drops -20 to -30. A lot of dealers put them on every car and truck they sell in the cold areas. My Dodge is a plug up and Its on a timer comes on at 4 am and good to go at 6:45.
