Meet Josie Basta. Josie was recently diagnosed with myocarditis and heart failure. Josie is currently on the waiting list for a heart transplant and is alive today thanks to a Berlin Heart Pump. Josie is a member of my family on the in-law side. She’s also one of the sweetest little girls ever to grace the face of the earth. I’m reaching out today to the JKO network to get her story out there and to ask for your help in the fight for her life.

She's been in the CICU since the middle of October and is not likely to be heading back home anytime soon unless she gets a new heart. In order to help defray just a fraction of the mounting medical costs associated with her extended hospital stay in the CICU and pending heart transplant, Josie’s Uncle Mike is distributing the Believe for Josie wristband. The wristband is purple, costs just $5.00, and is available in either child or adult sizes via the website link below. It is engraved with the phrase “Believe for Josie”.

Josie's Uncle Mike is my older brother, as well as the source of my very first Jeep - a 94 YJ with 152K on the odometer when I got it. He's the one who got me into Jeeps so I think the least we could do as a community is help him with his endeavor to help her. Not one penny of the proceeds will go anywhere but to Josie Basta's family.

I understand that the holiday season tends to leave us all a bit short on funds, so even if you can’t make a donation, please visit Josie’s website below to leave her a simple and positive message in the Guestbook. These messages help to keep up the spirits of not only Josie herself but also those of her family during this impossibly difficult time. To learn more about Josie Basta and the fight for her young life, you may visit her website here: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/josiebasta

For those who can afford to donate to Josie’s cause or stop by to leave well wishes; from the bottom of our hearts, the Basta and Devenney Families thank you.

If you are not already, please be the one to give, so that others might live. Become an organ donor today.

In for a wristband!

Do you know much about CaringBridge? Do all proceeds go to Josie?

"Not one penny of the proceeds will go anywhere but to Josie Basta's family. "

and CaringBridge is set up thru the hospital and any proceeds thru them are 100% hers.

Saw that about the wristbands, but wasn't sure about CaringBridge. Thanks.

FYI, $10 minimum on CaringBridge for credit cards.

THANKS!

That Tkob's a good egg, I tell you what.

Man that hits home, I am in Chappel Hill today getting my annual heart transplant workups from my transplant 12/05/08. Thanks for the link I will be shooting her a line tonite when I get home.

I'm sure that as someone who's BTDT, you'll have some personal insights you can share with the Bastas. Thanks very much for that.

With regard to the Caring Bridge website and questions about the destination of any donations made there, I'll be looking that up on their website tonight and posting back on this topic at both sites once I clarify this point.

The way the Caring Bridge website reads, it does seem like donations don't get shared with the family, but get made to the foundation in tribute for Josie. I'll get a straight answer and let y'all know.

Again, from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for everything.

EDIT:
I just read the Caring Bridge website up and down. Although I agree they do admirable work, whoever wrote the section on how donations can be made could use a refresher course on clarity. There's not a whole lot of detail surrounding the where and the how donations are applied when made "in tribute" to Josie.
I'm going to say that in light of the ambiguity on that subject, if you want to make 100% sure that your whole donation gets sent to the Basta family, I would say going to the Beat Goes On website in the OP and just ordering a few extra bands is your best bet.

The Bastas are currently in the process of obtaining a charitable organization status with the IRS so they don't slam into a mountain of new tax liability at the end of the year due to all the donations so this will all be a moot point before too long.

Good News!

The second shipment of 500 wristbands sold out before it even arrived! That's thanks in no small part to the NC 4x4 community. Can't thank you folks enough. A very fine thing you're doing for Josie.
Another order for 1000 wristbands is en route - so keep those orders coming.
On another note, I want to apologize to anyone who made a donation via the CaringBridge website thinking the funds would go to Josie. I think it's a shame how misleading the verbiage is on their website. They do good work, but allowing people to believe they're making a donation to Josie's fight instead of donating to CaringBridge seems a little underhanded, so I've pulled the link to them from my OP on the board where Tim spotted my original message.
There will be a trail ride for Josie's benefit coming up in the spring. We're looking at the first weekend in April

One way we've come up with so that people can donate more than $5 at a time is to order the number of bands you want, and then add an additional amount, stating in the comments box how many you actually want, sizes they should be, and how much of an additional donation you're making. That should keep everyone on the same page.
Let's keep that brother of mine hopping with all these orders!
Thanks again for all the support!

Wow that is amazing timing. I hope everything checked out good for you. God Bless.

I received my wristband this morning! Bump for a good cause!

I just received mine 2 days ago and have been wearing it since.

Jeepin For Josie

We're doing a Pine Barrens Poker Run! We're thinking April 1st to 3rd. As soon as we make sure the campsite's available for that weekend, it'll firm up more.

There will be primative camping available Friday afternoon through Sunday for anyone who makes the trip. Privvy toilets and potable water only - No RV hookups or cabins.
We're looking at doing a show & shine first thing in the morning and the poker run in the afternoon. Afterwards, we'll all head somewhere, show down for the best hand and maybe some wings & at the Pic depending on the size of the group.
Sunday looks like either some trail maintenance at Apple Pie Hill by clearing some trash, or maybe wheeling Forked River. Hasn't really been firmed up yet.
Hope to put some names to faces at the Pine Barrens Poker Run - We're Jeepin for Josie!

UPDATE`

Looks like the Show & shine is getting dropped. Too many events crammed into the same day will just make it tough to enjoy for anyone.

The Pine Barrens Poker Run now has a sponsor!

A big thank you goes out to Hatch and Maral at Safari Straps for donating two boxes of their gear. Can't wait to see what's inside!:bounce2:

For anyone planning on attending from the NC4X4 crowd, please respond either here, or send me a PM so we can make sure you get a campsite reserved for the weekend. Site should open up midday Friday and we'll be able to stay until late in the day on Sunday so you can rest up for that ride home.

Hope to put some faces to all you guys showing your support!

UPDATE: Charity auction!

Not sure what the restrictions are on cross-posting links to other 4x4 forums but any JK owners in the crowd may be interested to know that there are currently 10 auctions going on with donated goods over on jkowners.com in the chit chat section -

100% of all proceeds collected will be donated to Josie. :bounce2:
