Thread on how to remove axle shafts from D30

A few methods to pop the unit brg out is to:
1) Flip the rotor around and put it on backwards, only tighten the lugs nuts on part way. Use the rotor as a slide hammer of sorts.
2) Put the 3 bolts back in and thread them on part way. Leave the socket on the bolt and pry against a block or similar. Or hammer on the socket.

I'd also, break the nut loose while the tire is still on and its on the ground. If you need to use a socket w/ breaker bar the weight of the rig will help hold it from spinning while you free it.

i've removed the rear 3 bolts for the brg (after the axle nut and axle are loose from the brg) and then taken a wide cold chisel and 2-4 lb hammer and worked the brg loose from the knuckle. cut into the brake shield some but, it all came out and off.. took sandpaper and cleaned the rust off so next time its easier (and added some oil to keep it from rusting).. I will make a recommendation against using a 3 jaw puller to pull the bearing out of the knuckle... usually they come apart...

the easiest way I have found to pop that hub out is to loosen those 3 bolts, to the point where they are most of the way out, then put a long socket over the bolt head and against the inner C.

then turn the wheel. move the socket to the bolt on the other side, turn the wheel the other way. It pops the hub right out.

I have never had a problem with a slide hammer. Did a free rental from Auto Zone.
My only problem was that both time I needed to use one, I was have a really bad eczema flare up on both palms. Makes using a slide hammer a bit painful.
First time was on my 93 YJ when I upgrade to chrom shafts. The hubs hadn't been touched since it was built at the factory back in 93. So about 13 years of exposure.
