Throwing Good Money After Bad?

Have a 91 Wrangler. Didn't realize it when I bought it but there is a crack in the left frame rail at the steering box. It can be fixed but it could cost as much as $700.00. We already replaced both front calipers and the power steering pump. I bought it for my son for his 16th birthday as a project car. I'm beginning to feel like I'm throwing away good money. Has anyone ever had a frame problem and if so how did it turn out? BTW, I'm new to this world and really don't know the cost of such things and how frequently they happen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's not all that uncommon. Cheverolets are well known for this too. So bad infact, that they offer a kit to fix it. Any Competant mechanic/welder should be able to take care of this for you, at a lesser price than what you quoted. If you were closer to me I would fix it for less than half that.

Keep on here, there are great people here that can help out. I would do it, but I have never fixed one before so without seeing it I can't say what it would take. If anyone can toss out info about fixing it or post some pics on what it looks like I can probably weld something up.

Hey doc, my guess is you can get it fixed MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper...so don't feel as if your money is going down a big hole.

FIRST thing I will suggest is considering joining CNC4x4, they have lots of members in the RTP / Triangle area and I bet you can get one of them (or someone on here) to help reweld the frame add supports.

Another thing to look at when doing this....

www.bigdaddyoffroad.com has some frame supports for CJs...I would suggest seeing if they have one that will fit/work on the YJ.

If you do not have some more replies from local folks by Tuesday I will jump back on here and suggest a few over in the Gsbo area.

But don't feel bad...you can get it fixed and that is way overpriced of a quote.
