I want a drag link that is strong enough for the whole weight of my truck to sit on it and not bend it. I have a couple old torsion bars from a half ton chevy. Could I drill holes in the ends, tap some threads, and put heims on the ends to use as a tie rod?

Have fun drilling that.

let's say for giggles that you got it all mounted up.. now you're going to break the knuckle instead of bending a tie rod. sweet!

Stronger but not that strong

Try a Rugged Ridge HD steering kit.
Heavy duty but won't break the knuckle.
Personally, it was less work to replace the steering with the rugged ridge than it would have been just to do the tie rod ends.

Why don't you run a 1.5 .250 DOM tube with weld in bungs, its pretty darn simple and strong. You aren't far away, come by the shop.

torsion bars are very brittle, if you put the weight of your truck on it it may shatter...I know I have seen abused torsion bars do that on nissans

Mine is home grown, I think 1 inch ID pipe(yes, pipe) and next size larger pipe over that. Weld in bungs, maybe total investment of $50 including the assist mount.

IF you aren't gonna run high steer and it's gonna see a lot of abuse, you might want to consider an aluminum one. Rich has aluminum links on his buggy, and they will bend like a banana, but come right back to shape(straight). More expensive, but some give would be better than broke knuckles

Just make sure its 7075 Aluminum

Yeah, but I was told several times that aluminum links won't work..
