My dad has 2 super duties. The work truck is a 2000 250, 7.3, auto with 367000 miles. the second is an 06 250 king ranch, 6.0, auto, 90000 miles. The 6.0 has left him stranded several times the last week in colorado and again in new mexico. He is home now and ready to trade it in. We really like the 7.3's dependability but i've been trying to talk him into trying a duamax/allison truck. Are there any certain years of the 7.3 or the duramax to stay away from?

If anyone has any comments on the cummins that would be usefull also.

We have four trucks with the allisons in them at work and they SUCK. I say go for the Dodge and not have all the problems again. I like the 7.3's but all of them are getting alot of miles on them so they are gonna need repairs soon.

:wtf:

you want to send him to dodge when thay havent got a auto tranny to hold up behind a oil burner for years. let alone gas motors.

i see / hear more problems with dodge trannys .

I've heard the same things about dodge autos. I like what I've read about the allisons and I lime how the chevy/gmc's ride. But he is used to the fords. He loves the king ranch but he is done with all the problems with the 6.0.

I think it goes without saying when referring someone to a Dodge they mean a 6spd manual unless they're trading in on a new one with the Mercedes 6spd auto which I here is a really good auto.

If I was gonna by a newer one it would be straight drive. I have had other guys tell me their Allisons worked good, I just know ours suck. We have one in the shop now with the third trannie since 2006 with 150,000 on the odometer. The most our trucks haul is 2000lb and get serviced by Allison every 10,000 miles. If someone gave me a new one I would tow it to the shop and trade it. My son had a 2008 250 and the milage was terrible on it. He got 13 empty and 8-9 hauling his Harley on a lawnmower trailer. I was told they got alot of the problem fixed since then, but I had to take a $40,000 gamble

The earlier Duramax's seem to have the most injector issues. 04.5 and 05 (LLY motors) have had a lot of problems overheating. I'm sure there's gonna be somebody on here that's gonna say they have one and it's never overheated but it's a very common problem with an LLY. Another thing to watch for on a Duramax is check the top of the transfer case. They're are prone to have holes worn in them from I think a wire loom that hasn't been secured from the factory.

tell him to look at it this way... he could have broken down in kansas. pretty sure he'll keep his colorado, new mexico, and the six liter.:flipoff2:
jokes aside, there's really no exscuse your old man should have had to put her in the crispies. i mean, i'm sure his lovin son had him taken care of with all the preventative head stud hardware swaps, egt delete,? If the truck was "as delivered", then damn. shame on a lot of ya''ll for letting that happen.
bottom line, unless we're throwing in the "can't get a clue" general public people, the 6.0 is a damn fine engine with some damn fine people that can whisk away any of the tired old complaints we all hear. does it take a little work to get it there? yes. do all the other "big 3" diesels? yes. they've all got their tweaks they need before they play nice.

what dog do i have in the fight? well, not much since i sold my 7.3 in favor of a v10 and my pops has a full race tuned 100% stock internals 6.0 he drives full tilt daily and laughs at things like checkin the oil much less upgrading head studs.:huggy: i've told him to spread some luck around....

stay away from 03-05 duramax LB7,they have lots of injector problems. dodge is only good if you stick with the manual tranny, and if the clutch ever goes out or you plan on chipping it or anything just go ahead and fork out the extra coin for a hazley clutch or south bend, and you'll never have to worry about it again. new 6.7 powerstroke is a BEAST but im sure its gonna have some problems being the first of its kind. ive heard nothing but good about allison trannys by the way.

You're exactly correct. All of the 6.0 problems are easily fixed. In fact, there's a good article in the new Fourwheeler magazine about "How to Make a 6.0 Reliable". I think they only had to spend $7,500.00 on it's "tweaks".

Well, we took it back to fort mill ford today (where he bought all of his 3 fords) and they are replacing the head gaskets on it. I tried to talk the service manager into putting arp studs in it but he claims it doesn't need it. Something about a new designed head gasket and ford not warranting it if we did that. He ended up going ahead and buying an extended warranty up to 200000 miles. He really likes the truck so this way he will have some peace of mind with keeping it.

read that article myself, its amazing the chain of events that come into play all because of an oil cooler.

but i do agree, if your willing to work out the issues with the 6.0 its one hell of an engine! pulls good, great MPG, FAST, and sounds great.

what in he HELL did they justify spending $7500 on just for the well known list of preventative maintinance/preventative upgrade practices? a senior/master ford tech working double time on a sunday? some "might as well while we're at it" performance parts? i'm sure that in typical magazine fashion there was some parts porn and things done that didn't really "need" to be done. which is totally understandable, that's how they sell magazines. you also have to understand that they are no going to dare quote a "reasonable" price for fear of all the retards sending hate mail out of the wood work because they can't duplicate the "budget" cost. on the other end, they're not going to reveal what the true cost to an average person would be to do what they did since most of us don't get free labor (ourselves excluded, lol) free parts, etc.

so, in short, i guess that was a really long winded way of saying LOL @ magazine example.:flipoff2:

come on Rufus, its "only $7500" hahahaha i didnt even catch that. though i did read the article, and think with those repairs its a great motor, but who in the hell wants to spend 12-15 grand on a truck and have to spend another $7500 to trust it.
and i thought the same to myself after the article, wonder what it woulda cost me or you to have that done instead of a magizine?! lol
