tire size/ axle strenght???

trying to decide how big to go with my current axles (dana 30 4.56 gears lock rite, 8.8 4.56 ected locker) right now i am spring under running 33s. thinking of goin soa using my 4inch springs. what would not look stupid but would not destroy the front axle? feed back please!!!!!!:confused:
 
Alot of people have been running 35's on a 30 after they upgrade the shafts. You're gonna get some people who say they have destroyed a 30 with an open diff and 31's, and some who say they have a welded 30 with 49's, and it lives.

If you've been doing just fine with 33's, IMO, you'll be ok, with 35's (no boggers/krawlers), but you should look into upgraded shafts.

SOA with 4" springs sounds really tall though..
 
SOA with stock springs 35's look OK and the D30 will hold up under moderate use. SOA with 4" springs you better get some full widths to keep you from tipping over in the parking lot :) you'd need at least 39.5 - 42 to not look silly and then you're talking a stronger front axle. I'm SOA with stock springs and 42s. Granted it takes some cutting but I don't have to have a ladder to get in :)

i'm running 35" Boggers on my D30 with 4.56 gears, but it's an open diff. i also tend to error on the side of caution when it comes to planting my right foot when i'm on the rocks. i'd love to lock my front end but i'm really really afraid of what might happen. then again, spare NT D30 shafts are plentiful and cheap, lol. :D

my boss has a YJ on 35"s with 4.10s and locked D30. he was breaking shafts until he went with the upgrade axle shafts and he hasn't had a problem since.

There isn't really a definite answer to this question. If you use caution, you can probably get away with 35's on a Dana 30, but if you are going to drive like a nut, I'd upgrade. For that matter, you can probably break a Dana 80 with stock tires if you try hard enough.

Personally, I run IROK 36" tires on my stock Dana 30 and haven't had any problems yet. I know from watching others that my driving style depends more on choosing the right lines and tact rather than brute force. Still accidents happen.

PS - I've yet to meet anyone that has broken an axle shaft.
 
FWIW, I ran 35's on a stock hp 30 in my cherokee open. I didnt break a shaft until I broke a ball joint, when it broke my shaft went imidialty afterwords. You can do it, but shafts arent the only thing to worry about.

That said, Id do it again. Just have to be consious of your driving style.
 
I am running 16/35/15 boggers on my d30 and a locker. I have up graded the shafts but I ran this set up on stock shafts for over a year and never had a problem. I agree that your driving style has a lot to do with it. If you like the skinny pedel I would upgrade atleast the shafts if not the front axle.
