So I got a blazer 89 blazer for free. The person gave me the title he had for it. Here is the run down on....The current title holder sold it back in 2006. The title was noterized and left open for the new person to sign. Said person never did and then sold it to the guy I got it from a few years ago. The person that gave it to me didn't want to send it off because of "taxes". I wouldn't have wanted to either because the title seems pretty sketch. For all I know the owner could have filed for a lost title and then sold it to someone else. I'm going to try getting in contact with the last registeres owner to see if they will sign it over to me. If they have moved then I guess I'm shit out of luck. What are my options?

ok just had to go through this all you need is a bill of sale of where the guy u got it from bought it... a copy of his drivers Ln.. and to get two power of att. papers.. what this will allow you to do is get the tittle sent off with one power of atterny paper you can get a tag right then and there, and it will come back in both of your names... then send it back off with the other letter and get his name removed.... i know it kinda sucks but if you wanna drive it right away thats the best option, hope this helps

I'm sure you realize this "free" blazer is gonna start costing you if you actually do title etc

I'm with Mudder. If it's signed and notarized, the original owner had intended to sell it. If the buyer's name is left open, put your info there. NOT AT THE DMV! Do it at home, in black ink. You'll probably have to pay a late fee, as the stamp is dated, but that's like $15. I've done the same thing. As long as the seller's name is notarized, though, you're covered.

x3. if they question why you held the title so long, just say you have been working on it.

Notary stamps sellers signature only. Just like the guys said, if the buyer info is left blank, fill it in, take it to the DMV. You will have to pay the title fee $40, possible late fee for it not being registered sooner, $28 for tag and whatever the 3% tax is on the vehicle (if you choose to tag it.)

How long is the stamp good for? It was done in 06. The guy who gave it to me already signed it.

The stamped notary doesn't expire. Just sign it and take it to the dmv. Or float it to the next buyer.

Floating a title (what the guy you bought it from did) is illegal, FWIW.

The notary stamp should on that title should be good. If the guy you bought it from signed it as the "buyer" you may be fuct. he will have to get a title and sign it over to you.

I asked him if he would dio so and he said something about maybe having to pay back taxes....How much could that really be on a 89 blazer? not much I'm sure.

Either do what CGM147 did, or take the man to the Charlotte DMV and get a instant title put in his name (it will cost about $110 bucks) and then have him sign it over to you.

You may be able to go down there with him and a bill of sale and have a instant title put in your name.

probably like 15 bucks a year for three years. lmao, it wont be much for an old blazer. just tell him you'll pay the backtaxes and all should be good.

^ Maybe local property taxes...I can't confirm for sure. You do have to pay the highway use tax when you transfer a title regardless of whether you want a license plate. That has got to be one of the most crooked policies on the books. I bought a classic Bronco one time that was nowhere near road worthy. I told them I just wanted to transfer the title and I'd come back for plates when it was road worthy, but they made me pay HUT on it anyway. To add insult to injury, it is based on blue book value for some reason (I guess valuable vehicles put more wear on the asphalt than cheap ones?) and blue book on a classic Bronco is a whole lot higher than my rust bucket was worth. I think I paid around a grand for it and they charged me HUT on a $5,500 blue book or something. That's some b.s. right there that you have to pay HUT on a vehicle that doesn't get a plate for the highway.

i'm pretty sure its just a flat fee for not getting it transferred within the alotted time. Never heard of paying back taxes in this situation.

I'm putting a new starter in it tomorrow...then if it runs as good as he says....I will pester the shit out of him until I get him to send the title off for me
