Title Issues

Alright I am looking at buying another jeep, been talking to the owner, got most of the info, he doesn't have a title, says its in his name but would need sent off, I have never dealt with this, I assumed I could do a NC fast title at any DMV but that is not true, only raleigh and charlotte.

He lost it when he moved or something, I don't know...
Anyone know the best way to go about buying this vehicle?

Its a missing title type deal, he says he could transfer it to me but it would take 14-15 days before I could register the vehicle etc...

Any way around that other than drivin to charlotte/raliegh?
 
You can go to the DMV and have him fill out a lost title form, if he is the last registered owner and if it has a NC title. He will fill out the form (looks similar to the back of a regular NC title) and the DMV will process the form and it will come back in your name.

While you are there, you can go ahead and register the vehicle in your name and get tags for it.

Good Luck...I have been dealing with the same crap from a previous owner and he will not get me the title.....I am contemplating having my lawyer deal with my title issue....I have a bill of sale from the guy and he kept telling me he would get me the title etc.

Is that with the 2 door xj you were selling a while back?
 
Don't buy it until he has the title in his hand. At most put down a deposit. He could be lieing and title loan has the title or worse.
 
Just FYI...I avoided going to DMV and doing all the other things people recommended. My lawyer sent a letter to the guy and threatened a suit based on a NC Statute of fraud and they received the title today from him. Not what I wanted to do since I know the guy personally but thats what it came to. Now I can actually mess with the jeep a lot more since I don't have to worry about it being sold to another guy etc.
 
just make sure you and the owner go to the DMV together and have a lost title form switched to you lik Kyleg336 said.
ive done this before with an 80 GMC
