Long story short, I found a truck I want to buy, title is in the grandfathers name witch passed away some time ago. I am being told that the title is in the "familys" name now (not my words) and the grandmother would sign it, then they will file for a NVR4 (lost title) b/c grandaughter want to keep the "green" title b/c of sentimental value, then I take the NVR4to DMV and the title will come back in my name. Question is, is any of this true, will it cost me any extra $$? Thanx.

I bought a 89 ford a while back...got the title sent..it off...Come to find out it was wraped up in a "estate" or so they say...estate has been closed long ago..NC Dmv has the title and will not send me one back. Been driving the truck around for 2+ years legally..no problems geting it inspected or tags etc but still dont have a title in my hand to be able to sell the truck.

Titles in dead peoples name can be tricky.

As long as the Grandmother is the executor on the will that is no problem. You may have to show her executor order or some similar paperwork.I am sure they have this, they would definitely have needed it more than once by now.

Well that sounds backwards. I would say they apply for the lost title. They (the executor of the estate) then get the new title, notarize it, the new title, (properly) over to you and then you use that title to get it in your name.

You do not want to get in the middle of a title conflict in an estate.BTDT as both an executor of an estate and the beneficiary of a vehicle being willed to me. A death certificate by itself doesn't do diddly squat.

The deceased person left the vehicle to someone/estate, either by default or a will. Between probate court (even if the will wasn't probated) and the DMV you have to follow the law. In my case the DMV was the dick head and the clerk of courts was the nice guy who straightened it all out.

Why can't they just claim lost title, get a new one, and then sign over to you? Put the onus on them to get a updated title.

I think this is what they are doing, gotta call the guy Wed. and get everything straight for this weekend. Any idea on how long it takes to get the title after filing lost title claim? Thanx for everyones response.
