other then rubys what year /models came w/ the d44 rear axle or is it just hit or miss finding one

any 4.0 that had the factory tow package had a rear 44

Maybe from a certain year on, (I think 01 or 03 on?)
But Jeep's never been one for standardizing things. So if you're looking in yards, you have to just lean under and look.

I have a '99 sahara that came with the tow package and I have a d35. Wish it was a 44

thats correct, I dont know and dont care to look up the exact year. The D44 wasnt even offered on TJs until later, probably after the Rubi. No matter what trim or tow package, the 97-?? TJs came from the factory with the turdy-five. After that, I think all Sahara's got the D44 standard and it was an option on the Sport and X trim packages.

Yea, but see that's where logic breaks down.
I do know of ONE guy with a 44 in a 97 sport. (I'm sure there are others, but I personally only know one.)
I also know that my 98 TJ Sport, on the build sheet, and what my wife paid said dana 44. (It did NOT have one, yes I inherited it 5 years after the fact. Do you know how long you have to claim fraud in Va? 5 years. But with all the work she had it at the dealer at first for, there is no telling)

I would say all 05+ rocky mt packages have a 44 with disk brakes. (Cause that's what it said on the website) BUT that's not true either, as I looked at one with a 35 rear end.
:(

Just like I've also seen/heard of 4.0s getting 4.10s from the factory, not rubicons. And 2.5s getting 3.73s or worse.
(Have I mentioned I think someone might be selling some good stuff on that line?)

So back to your original question, other than a rubicon, OR an unlimitted, there is NO guarantee it's a 44 in back.

it didnt come stock in any non-rubicon tj. it was offered as an option for the sports and saharas and came with 3.73 gears. i have never seen an x model that offered that option. i have a tj 44 rear housing laying in the shed. doesnt have any of the good stuff like brakes, axle shafts, or a carrier, but it is a start. like scott said they came in the unlimiteds factory as well
