Tobacco buying age has been raised to 21 in the US - CNN

How is this legal? Where does the constitution give the feds the right to dictate the legal smoking age, drinking age, or pistol purchase age?

So now between 18-21 you can vote, serve in the military, enter a binding contract, and you’re legally completely on your own. Between ~16-21 you can be sentenced to life in prison. But not allowed to by smokes or a handgun.

Last I checked these new laws are coming from the state level. You’ll notice the legal age for tobacco went up in major college towns...

Just politicians patting themselves on their backs honestly.

Nope, this one came from the FDA .

I could care less honestly. I am 34 so it doesn't affect me even if I did smoke. But I don't want my kids to smoke either, or do any of that gay vaping crap, so I'd be happy if they banned it altogether (since we know making stuff illegal works SOOO well).

If you are going to suck toxins into your lungs, at least do the good stuff (tobacco) so you don't look gay with the vapes. ***That said I don't want to breath either of them 2nd hand!

the stank and cloud of vape emitting from 3 vehicles ahead it ridiculous.

“How much attention can I draw to myself showing how cool I am with a douche flute”

and the ones that carry it around like a security blanket, I just wanna laugh hysterically at them.

This is basically a ‘war on drugs’ for legal products...because ya know, high schoolers never smoked/dipped (or drank) prior to legal age before.

I think it's a good idea, but who follows the rules (how many of us have done things "you're not old enough", drink, smoke, drive, go to strip clubs, run heavy equipment, etc...).

If you are a legal adult at 18, then by God, be a 100% adult and let them figure it out on their own, tobacco, alcohol, guns, etc.

I don’t smoke, but I’m not for restricting people to make their own choice, even stupid ones.

also, I’m not sure how it’s going to make smoking any less accessible to whoever wants to do it.

As a parent and seeing some of the other things in this world, tobacco and alcohol are low on my list, education and moderation should be more of a priority. I've had former friends go down the "rabbit-hole" of other drugs, ruin bright futures and careers. On the same note "not to through rocks in a glass house" I enjoy drinking a beer and am working on quitting smoking (less than 10 a day, trying hard, wished I had never started!)

Agree 100%

My problem is that whether or not they smoke at 18 or 21, they will remain on their parents insurance possibly until age 26. It pisses me off that my older step-daughter continues to smoke and vape even with the begging and pleading of their younger (and smarter) siblings, but yet insists that her constant respiratory problems are a result of anything other than smoking. We are forced to keep her on our insurance and continue to pay higher premiums as a result.

Your choices should be YOUR consequences......

Here are some interesting tidbits.
- The FDA is exerting control over the sale of the product.... like it does any other drug or thing they have deemed harmful. They do not have the ability, though, to restrict USE. So technically, Federal law doesn't permit the use of tobacco under 21, only the sale of it. Once its in your hands the FDA has no authority. The state might but thats a separate issue.

- I know in most States that have matching laws, there is an exemption for active duty military. So you can still buy with a military ID under 21.
That creates an interesting twist in the statement, "I can fight and die for my country but not buy cigarettes." b/c it's technically not true.
Need to confirm whether this exemption exists at the Fed level.

I do agree w/ most that this is an overreach on behalf of FDA powers, but I can see the logic of how it is under their power to do so.

Just to be clear- you should not be under legal obligation to provide insurance after 18. E.g. not required to do so by a law. The law just says that you must be given the option to if you wish.
Now... leaving a loved one in a precarious healthcare situation is certainly a moral dilemma, so there may be a sense of moral obligation...

My understanding is that unless she has a job that provides medical care (she doesn't - she works 29 hours a week part time), we are required to keep her on our insurance.

A person of 18 can join the service, on his or her own, without parental permission.
A person of 18, can marry, without parental consent.
A person of 18, can enter any ( I think) legal binding agreements.
A person of 18 is REQUIRED, to have his or her own hunting license.
A person of 18 can vote, giving them a word in our governments.
So I do believe he or she should be able to buy a beer, a glass of wine, or even a shot
as well as they should be able to buy a weapon, a pack of ciggs, or a vap.
Could you imagine going on spring break, getting in trouble over ciggs, and it being brought up in a criminal history at a job interview?

Our country was founded on taxation, without representation.
To be honest, we are worse shape now, I think, than we were then.

Almost positive that is not the case. You can drop her anytime you want to after she turns 18.

You have the option to keep her on insurance until she's 26, but you are not legally required to.

There is a lot of information out there that says contradicting stuff, which is the problem. I've seen some places say that she "can" stay on it (my option), and other that say Dependents under 26 have to be offered coverage on plans offered by large employers. Obamacare is a cluster*#$@ of half-ass law and confusing mandate. It pisses me off that it was ram-rodded through congress without so much as a read-through and one of the biggest lies of all time "If you want to keep your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was never an "impeachable offense" like everything Trump seems to do.

Not sure if this will stir the pot or not...but I agree with all that, but would also raise legal driving age to 18 as well. Just personal belief, but I don’t believe kids are ready to drive at 16.

i would add to increase the legal age of emancipation (or whatever it is called) to 21 as well. How can you tell an 18 year old that you are now a legal adult able to make decisions and vote but you cant be trusted with tobacco or alcohol

If the step daughter chooses to smoke, I would make her pay her own portion of the insurance (or get her own plan). If she makes enough money to waste on cigarettes, IMO she should be forced to pay for other necessities too. Heck, she can likely get Medicaid if she is low income, but I can't think of ANY reason you should be FORCED to pay her insurance? I will help my kids buy their first car, but they will be getting jobs to cover as much of the car insurance as possible. If they choose to take up smoking or other bad habits I hope I have the nerve to impose more financial stress on them haha.
