i had a blast today!!

i was observing in the OR for the first time, and let me tell ya, you haven't seen it all 'til you watch a live surgery, and help even! well, all i really did was fetch a few things, and i inserted a catheter, but watching was awesome.

first they cut into the abdomen, then created a few ports for inserting cameras and tools. here is where you guys would love it!

tiny little scissors that burn through your flesh, tiny cameras, staplers, all this crazy stuff you put in a small hole and go do precise work with!

what made me think of you guys was this...
they did a liver biopsy while they were in there (just a tissue sample) and when they pulled the sample he went in with a little "flesh welder" to cauterize it. you could see the flesh sparking and burning, and all this smoke was coming out, but it really and truly looked just like he was doing some welding! haha!!

at any rate, i might see if i can arrange to job shadow in the OR in my spare (rare) time.
wish me luck on mid-terms starting monday! gonna be a bear and a half!

I'm having my septoplasty March 28. Still going to hold on to my other stuff for now:rolleyes: .

Hey Checkwhut, what profession is this that you are getting thsi kind of training? Just curious.
laparoscopic surgery is the new wave (cut smal holes and do everything from the inside). Had hernea surgery like thsi a few months ago, couldn't believet hat I was up and going normal-like iwthin a week.... last time (9 years ago) was down for 4-6 weeks.
I've actually used many of the tools you mention, let me tell you it's pretty freakin' cool... although my experience has been limited to non-humans....

i'm in my first semester of nursing school, finally got off the waiting list!! i am really enjoying it too.

91yota, i hear ya man! i definately have a different view of surgery now that i have seen it first hand, however, i will say this....

even though i now know that there is more to it than "pass out, wake up, puke, and it hurts, but it's fixed"....i wouldn't have it any other way. these people are on top of their game, and on top of the latest in safety and technology, and despite what you may see on TV or whatever, these doctors really care about the people they are operating on.

i may have made light of the situation, but this is not a game to these doctors. the human body is an amazing thing, topped only on earth by the human brain. feel confident that there will be no "messy welds" in your throat! haha

Which school are you going to? I've actually applied to Gaston College for their LPN program...but if that falls through, I"m hoping to start Nursing school in January at Carolinas College of Health Science (next to CMC).

I am at Cabarrus College of Health Sciences, at Northeast Medical in Concord, it's pretty tough, but it's pretty small too, so you really get to know your peers and professors.

Cool...I was thinking of applying there too...just to keep some options open. Right now I work at Carolinas Rehabilitation (at CMC-Mercy). I met one of the Heart Surgeons at Mercy and he pretty much offered me the opportunity to go check out a heart surgery...just have to find the time to take him up on it. :D

Dude I'm tellin you! Go do that!
Not only is it awesome but the people in the Surgery center at NEMC were really welcoming to us as students, and didnt make us feel like we were in the way at all.

In fact, the anesthetist on duty was really cool about talking to me about his job, his education, and letting me observe him. I am kinda leaning towards a masters in anesthesia, so I thought that was really nice of him.

Heart surgery huh? Well I hope you like being on your feet for hours at a time, because that will probably be one looooong surgery. BUt do it anyway!
