Tongue not adequate?

I was told the tongue on my trailer is not adequate to haul a full size trail rig on. The main part of it runs all the way down the middle to a cross member about 4" back on the trailer. It has a V shaped cross supports that are 2" by 2.5" Angle Iron. Does that sound like it's not enough? How else could I tell?

No, definitely not. Cut that one off and build a proper one out of 4" or 6" channel of adequate web thickness that runs back to the front tires and that might do... assuming the rest of the trailer is strong enough.

What you have there might be enough for the static loads, but not enough for road use.

You'd come out cheaper to put a proper tonge on that one, provided the frame and running gear is adaquate. I've added dovetails, lenght, tongues ect. to existing trailers for owners that needed a trailer to do that one extra job. Remember the axles, tires and general hardware is commonly the biggest expense in all but the largest framed trailers. For a tandom axle tag of that size, IMO the tongue was never adequate. It looks to be of home built origin.

Well it has bigger issues than just the tongue. It has no suspension, and brakes on only one axle which need rebuilt. I was going to rebuild the brakes and live with no suspension but now I'd be better off just to get a different trailer.
