What are some of the tools that you guys never hit the trail without having in your trucks? Im thinking a good socket set, hammer, adjustable wrenches, and pliers....

A hi-lift, a BFH, and everything needed to swap both front and rear axles and driveshafts. Oh, and I almost forgot, if you drive a range rover, you just carry a checkbook. :flipoff2:

Good thing I bought a jeep. I love the Rovers but they are damn expensive to fix.

By the way, whats a BFH.....

BFH = Big F'ing Hammer

lol, if your wheeling a rover carry a cell phone and a tow hook.

seriously though, another key rule, dont wheel alone. URE is usually safe cause there are most times plenty of us NC4x4 folks around, but your alot safer if you bring your rescuer WITH you!

Big Freakin Hammer.

When I DD'ed my wheeler, I carried enough tools to take the whole truck apart and fix whatever broke so I could get home. Multiple socket sets, wrenches, any specialty tool required for my vehicle, hammers, pry bars, pretty much every tool I own. Now that I have a tow rig im slowly trimming the fat.

I love all the Rover jokes....:flipoff2:

I acually have only wheeled the D90 a few times. 1 - its too expensive to fix if it breaks, 2 - my dad likes it clean and on the road instead of on the trails.....

BFH is obsvious - but in addition to that, an extra chunk of pipe to use as a breaker bar.... often that negates the need for the BFH.

Oh - and duct tape!

I carry a 20-30 peice wrench set (inexspensive Stanley set), a 190 piece socket set (inexspensive Channellock), a screwdriver/bit set, a variety of visegrips and pliers, a few hammers, a flashlight, extra fluids, and a pipe for added leverage. I also run a fullsize rig so I have a little extra room.

In my towrig I usually carry a power converter, drop light, drill, grinder, sawzall, sometimes my 110V welder, and my bigger tools/wrenches.

I just try and ride with people who i know bring tools. I personally take a few sockets, 2 adjustable wrenches (what CANT you tighten with those?), tape, few allen keys, and some small electrical stuff (because i know personally who wired my buggy.). I usually carry little if no spare parts. I hopefully my junk will drag to trailer if i tear it up.

I carry the tools & spare parts to fix the common trail repair stuff. Drive shafts, stub shafts, steering linkage getting bent. Then there is the odd & end stuff I carry for electrical.
1 full set of wrenches (metric or standard depending on your vehicle)
1 full set of sockets all deep well
2 pliers
2 pair or screw drivers of each Phillips & flat (different sizes)
1 lump hammer
1 front wheel spindle nut
1 snap ring tool
1 set of allen wrenches
I have a few home made tools for those pain in the ars areas
all of this fits in an ammo box. I also wrap these tools in shop rags to keep them from rattling around.

I carry:

3 socket sets (one of which is all metric and has breaking bar since my truck is Japanese, goes up to 27mm)
BFH
Rubber Mallet
Jump Box
Power converter and shop lights
Flashlights and head lamp
safety glasses
3 gallons of water
brake fluid
power steering fluid
fire extinguisher
Two first aid kits, one in the cab and one in the bed
Spare hoses
Electrical stuff
And finally 2 full toolboxes full of misc stuff like pliars, channel locks, allen wrenches, screw drivers, wire brush, elbows, spare socket wrenches, adjustable wrenches, pipe wrenches, etc

We had a thread like this before if someone wants to reserect it.
I don't carry the normal stuff like most do, but, I don't wheel alone either. I do carry specialty tools and tools specific things like Spindle nut sockets. Welding vice grips, Air tools such as Impact, Drill, Grinder and air up stuff.
Also carry a welder.
Spares for about everything I might tear up, or I have seen tore up.
Metal for repairs. Fluids, U-joints for everything one ton and down.
Way too much to list, but, I would be probably 500lbs lighter if I didn't carry anything.

I depend on the kindness of others, a set of hand tools and a high lift some rocks & sticks. one time I half hitched a snatch strap over and over to hold a CV joint together. the dude drove it home. lol

being able to improvise helps a lot. like rigging a log to use as a skid if you break an axel. or using two logs as a jack

i always have my oba and my obw, and obviously a big f'n hammer. Definitely a good set of sockets/wrenches/screwdrivers.
And i guess now that i'm doing an engine swap i'll have to carry a decent electrical kit.

Edit: and my hi lift obviously, but that's also attached.

That all sounds good. This trip I will have 5 other guys with lots of tools so Im not sweating it as much as I normally would.

If you're in a newer jeep bring every size torx bits, axle nut socket, and an extendable magnet to fish out all the pieces of rear axle shaft when it breaks. Also c clips if you have them as well as spiders. My rule of thumb is I bring every hand tool I needed to assemble my rig. Also make sure you have a 13mm 12 point short socket or wrench to pull the unit bearings if you break a D30 front shaft. Also the D35 rear carrier center pin is a 1/4" 12 point - wrench only, socket won't fit.

Lots of great info here. Just want to add, Get a small coffee can & fill it with misc hardware such as nuts bolts washers screws nails cotter pins c-clips E-clips rollpins a small roll of 18gauge wire (stainless preferred) electric crimp ends (Buy a snack pack with crimper). Also electric tape [duct tape, you are a livin in the south] tire plug kit, spare fan belts. Tough to find hiding places in a jeep, but well worth the effort.

Out of all of the mechanics on this board I cant believe it made it to the second page before someone said duct tape
