Favorite toy as a kid: :bounce2:
Hot Wheels. Sure, I had barbies and other stuff. Thinking back, though, the Hot Wheels got the most mileage... because they went out in the dirt, to the pool and everywhere in between.

When I was 5 (1963), I got a Tonka Concrete mixer based on a Jeep truck for Christmas. (Ironically, I drive concrete mixers for a living now and am partial to Jeeps). Had that toy for over 10 years before giving it to the son of one of my mother's friends.

Dukes of hazzard matchbox cars, tonka trucks, and the venerable sit & spin.

EDIT: yeah, Legos, too.

Anyone remember Voltron? :D

Hot wheels and whatever bike I had cobbled together that week.

Tools and Lego's

have had some sort of tool kit/box since I was 5, had a huge bin full of Legos as well, that and a lot of model air planes and cars, had a battleship once, but never really got into it.

had Tonka trucks and "Tootsie Toy" trucks, Fire and rescue set, Construction set, and a few Jeeps. Evil Knievel crank up motorcycle with posable action figure, ( worth $$$ today, it's long gone) Had a "Rescue Ranger" backpack explorer kit, neat stuff to a 7-8yo kid.
was in a Model Club, new model every month, and a sweet set of paint and detailing supplies. Was never real good at the details of some of the models, but some of them did turn out pretty well.

Then it was skate boards, coaster carts ( lived on a hill) and Bicycles, had the first bike in town with a rear disc brake ( JC Penneys finest ) absolutely useless when it was wet, complete junk by todays standards !

Then it was into the cars, had a Meyers Manx Dunebuggy, my dad bought it in 1974, was the family toy till I got it when I got out of highschool, sold it in 1993 to buy my first Toyota 4x4, man I wish I still had that car !

Back in the late 70s and 80s...

#1 My dad's tools, especially electric powered ones
#2 My legos, my monorail space station is at the top of the list
#3 Fishing pole with bucket of worms
#4 6" bowie knife
#5 water skis

My tonka trucks are mixed in the top 5 somewhere. Still have them, cleaned and boxed up for my sone one day

Legos by a wide margin.
To this day, I can remember that very specific sound of a lego getting sucked up into a vacuum cleaner, rapidly turning it off hoping it wasn't already into teh bag, lol.

Had the above-mentioned Monorail set, plus about 10,000 other pieces. Enough that it took over a big portion of my room.
I think the Monorail was the only kit I actually put together, as per the instructions/intended model. I got to where I'd scout out and buy sets just because of specific pieces that came in them, I'd have something in mind I wanted them for. Actually for many years, my dream job was to be an engineer for Lego, "that guy" who designs the models and kits... then it changed to being a professional musician, drummer, rockstar.... then reality settled in...

#2 after the Lego's was Transformers; actually my favorite thing to make w/ them was changing/transforming vehicles, and 'Mech types of robots.

y'all need to post up what years you were kids...make it more relevant....we didn't have transformers, star wars, etc back when. And it was when Legos came in a big box of blocks...not a lego model you just put together, you had to create your own stuff from them. My nephew had me help him a few weeks ago put together some lego contraption...he had no concept of creating something with the legos...he only knew to follow the picture book and build what he was told to. (Programming of the kids, but that's another TOTW).

I was a kid in the 60's and 70's...model trains, and GI Joe was big for me....back when he was a soldier and killed stuff, not an "adventurer". Legos, too.

Funny thing is I had about a half dozen Jeeps as a kid...Tonka's, etc...

x2 i used to totally ignore all my gifts at christmas other than whatever lego kit i got. i would often put together the kit, then disassemble it and use the parts for other things. i made a badass boat out of several kits and odd pieces that i had. my mom was thoughtful enough to put it away when i lost intrest in legos and now it resides on a shelf in my room.

i also always had a thing for any type of gun. i used to get rewarded with toy guns when i was real young for not pissin the bed X number of nights in a row.

#1 Legos
#2 Legos
#3 Matchbox cars/HO train set (hand in hand)

The legos had battles, off road jeeps, fighter jets, space ships, lazers, bazookas, submarines... my nephew is getting into Legos!!!!!!!!!!!!

kid of the 70's/80's

lego's
lincoln logs
star wars figures
stompers

Well I was a kid in late 70s into the 80s.

For oyu Lego guys - stop motion video of assemby of the largest Lego kit ever sold
http://tv.boingboing.net/2008/01/28/vlog-50-years-of-leg.html

And I was right on the edge of the transition/take-off period for Lego, I remember them progressing from just blocks to castles (First the old yellow ones, made all of blocks, then to gray
panel" construction), then to the more complex pieces, when they introduced the "space" line etc.
I' mreally no ta fan of them now, too many specialty/wierd pieces, I liked having to creatively figure out how to MAKE an odd-shaped hinge or whatever.

Erector set, of course

I gotta go with the erector set. Tinker toys and licoln logs were also in the running for faves.

No cutting or welding required... just bolt it together!

Updated my response to include applicable year.

I think he is talking about the type that YOU grew up with being too easy....

i was a early to mid 90's lego user. before all the space ship, one of a kind, parts. iirc when the first new star wars came out and they started making the stupid star wars theme crap, thats when i got out of the lego deal.

then i started playing with real guns and four wheelers and havent stopped yet.
