Tow Rig Tire - Nitto, Kumho Or Something Else?

Time for tow rig tires. I have run two sets of Dayton Timberline AT and had great service from them. Last set was BFG AT, I wouldn't go there again. I'll be running 265/75/16 Load E tires and have been looking at Nitto ($150 ea) and Kumho ($125 ea) ATs. Anyone have experience with either of these brand ATs. Other recommendations?

Nittos on my rig. Call brandon at rides for the best pricing too....

John...I have the Nitto Dura Grapplers on the my Dodge now. I like them and have about 5000 miles on them. They felt a little spongey at first but that only lasted a few hundred miles (not sure what caused that). I think it will be a good highway tire that can handle some mild non-pavement driving and decent in the snow due to the siping. They are still quite and aren't "cupping" either.

Michelin LTX ... the last set I had went like 80K+ miles, but I here the Nitto's do well also, just haven't had any.

That is what I am running. Why did you not like them?

You won't find a tire that lasts longer than a Michelin LTX. I put a set of the newest tread design, the LTX A/T 2, on our F-250 at the FD and they are barely showing signs of wear after 5,000 miles and we are very hard on them. The last set we ran was BFG ATs and they went 15,000 and were shot.

While NOT on a towrig, ALL the Kumho's I've run (4 sets on 2 DDs) have fallen *WELL* short of their advertised lifespan... like 2/3rds of the 50k/80k mile ratings!

Switched to Bridgestones the last go round a few months ago. *IF* my wifes DD continues to get such poor tire life, I'll be installing a block under the throttle! :shaking:

I run the Nitto Terra Grapplers (295/70/17) on my 1/2 ton tow rig. I'm getting about 40k miles out of them. They hook great on pavement, dirt and do well in wet conditions. They are CRAP in mud. My recommendation is to avoid these tires. I feel like the cost is a little high for the amount of performance. I believe Nitto makes a new AT tire that is supposed to be much better the TG. Might check into that.

The Michelin LTX A/T 2's are over $200 a piece. While I'm sure they're good tires for highway use, I can't imagine them doing well in offroad situations. I will likely opt for a more aggressive mud terrain when I replace my tow rig tires in a couple months.

I put a set of the Nitto Terra Grapplers on my Tahoe when I got it. Only have about 2,500 miles on them but they have performed well so far.

That tire looks like it would get stuck in wet grass.

They've really surprised me. I thought the same thing but they do very well on our powerstroke. They are more aggressive in person. While they're not as aggressive as a lot of all terrains, they do great in ice and snow. We haven't got the truck stuck yet with them on it and we end up off road in it pretty often. I wouldn't run them just because I like running a mud tire. If I was looking for mileage on a tow rig that was on the pavement the majority of the time, they would be my choice.

I have been very pleased with the Nittos on my suburban.

I have Firestone destination at's on my truck and I like the tire but they won't last long. I'll never buy them again.

I have pimped the LTX A/T's for a while here while many scoffed.
I have put over 80k on two separate sets.
They ride great for an E range on the street. And despite their looks they clean out surprisingly well in the slick stuff. they dont look uber cool and gnarly but they just keep chugging through slop...now Im not saying they are a bogger by any means but i woulnt hate on them because of their looks.

I did pay $840 installed for my last set at Sam's...but that gets lifetime road hazard and balance and rotate....and again, if you got 40k out of your BFGs like I did...then the extra $200 pays for itself if you keep the truck.

oh did I mention they are SILENT!

I just checked, and I've got 26,000 miles on my BFG AT's. They will most likely be down to the wear bars before 35,000 miles. I figured that was acceptable on a typical fairly heavy 3/4 ton diesel truck. What kind of vehicle did you get 80,000 miles out of a set of those Michelin's on?

x2 I ran the LTX's on my last tow rig, and they were a great tire. Lasted forever and rode great. Of course they're not a MT, or even a really aggressive AT, but they are good at what they do.

My dad runs the XPS rib in the front and the LTX MS in the rear of his 4wd powerstroke and we use it in the hay field every year and have not had a problem getting stuck. I have no idea how long they've been on the truck and they're the only tires he's ever put on it. He bought two used xps rib tires for the front and one of them finally blew out a couple years ago. Looked and the date code was 1995 on it. He put two new ones on it then and they still look new.

I run the cooper stt's on my tow rig and my trail rig. Have been very happy with them on both. Oh and my last set got just over 50,000 miles on my last tow rig. Pretty damn good for a MT on a tow rig.

the first was an 01 f-350 7.3
The 2nd was an 03 Dodge 2500 CTD (and to be totally transparent, I only put 40 on this one, then sold it to my dad who put 40k more on it then sold it with the tires still on.)

Had Kumho AT's on my red 2500HD, they were pretty damn good for a "cheap" tire. Just needed to get them re-balanced every so often.
