toyota 3rd's 4cyl vs. 6cyl

I am planning on going to 5.29 in the future in order to run 35's. It has been suggested that i keep an eye out for some 3rd's off a 6cyl, so i can run the heavier duty gears.

My question is, are front and rear 3rd's interchangeable? Since I have the solid front axle, I'm not sure what my chances of finding a 6cyl front 3rd are...unless i could use a rear on it...then i could just find 2 6cyl rear 3rd's...is this making sense?

any advice would be appreciated

thanks
chuck

no extra stress on the birfs, but you probably will not need V6 3rd's, maybe in the rear. if you are running stock birfs or anything besides 30 spliners then your axles will give up before your gears. In the rear you might break gears before shafts but it is pretty tough, and 6's break too. I have 4cyl 5.29's in mine and they haven't given up yet.

yes the heat treated ones are worth it in my opinion (gears) , and dammitt if you get 30 spliners before me, i might cry. But yes start saving, defiently worth it if you plan on beating it to death, if just mildy building/beating it send stock ones to bobby and have them treated they will hold up to 35's for many many years at a much lower cost.

As far as I know the only differance between the 4cyl. and the 6cyl. thirds is the size of the carrier bearings.
btw: i love my 30 splines ;)

third

The carrier bearings are bigger and the gears are bigger. The ring gear is almost twice as thick as the 4cyl. Plus the housing is much stronger.

V6 has bigger carrier bearings and a bigger lower pinion bearing. It also has 4 ribs on the outside of the case, instead of the 3 ribs the standard 4cyl has. Biggest advantage of the V6 is that it reduces the amount of flex in the third. Gear Size is almost identical. The carrier also uses a 4 crosspin design apposed to a single pin. This make a lockright a little stronger in my opinion...

V6 are only found in the rear. There are interchangable with the front though. If you are wanting to go everyting "the best" the first time...i would go ahead and look toward a highpinion in the front. You will spend a good bit more money...but it will be done.

With all that said....there are plenty of us still running 4cly thirds. The V6 and the highpinion are both nice upgrades...just depends on what the bugget allows.

However...Chromoly Longs should be moved higher on your list...At least the 27spline outers.

If you have any more questions PM me.

Forgot to mention...Longs treated gears are great....However, there are strongly recomended NOT to be used in the rear of a DD. You could still put them in the front with no worries...but his process actually makes them a little softer than stock, so in a DD application gear life would be reduced.

I put a link to here....easier to post pics if you want to see the difference in a 4cyl 4.10 and a V6 4.10

Damn guys, he's running 35's. How did anyone ever wheel a Toyota before Cromoly?

IMO, get a set of regular Long's, and spend the extra cash on the V6 carrier stuff.

V6

Rich is right, go for the V6 thirds, run stock axles and a good set of joints. I ran that combo for three years with 36's and never had a failure. When I went to 38's, thats another story.

so i am gonna be getting all this stuff from a guy for what seems like a fair price to me...

V6 3rd member from 1994 4Runner 4.56 gears (just for the housing)
Brand New Detroit E-Z locker for V6 Toy 8" diff still in box
Solid pinion spacer/collar for V6/turbo 8" diff brand new, includes 10 shims

i'm not sure about what a pinion spacer is or why/if i need it
but i'm gettin the whole shebang for 225

any thoughts or comments?

Does the V6 carrier come with that housing.....when i check a few month ago...it is hard to come by the V6 carrier unless you by the complete thrid for a yard.

Still a pretty good deal for just the EZ and the solid spacer. Thous alone will general run you are 225 for the pair.

Just a though.

he still has the diff in the axle, and will be pulling it when his new one comes in the mail, so i would say yes, the carrier is there, however, i commited to buy this only if it is not complete trash when he pulls it...since i will be regearing it.

the guy i'm buying this stuff from said:
As stated in my thread it'll be out sometime around the middle of next week and I'll make sure that nothing serious is wrong with it.
I'm not an expert on diffs, but I would say the bearings and/or the ring and pinion are shot. I've had the vehicle almost 3 years now and it started whining about 2 1/2 years ago and has gotten progressively worse, but it's still driveable. When I changed the fluid I did have metal chunks on the drain plug. Not much larger than a BB, but large enough to not be normal.

it sounds like it's pretty chewed up, but i'll get him to send some pics when he pulls it and let you guys see what ya think.

Forgot the mention...may not be a issue, but sometimes the spidergears in the stock V6 carrier tend to scar the inside of the carrier because of oiling issues. I took apart two last year that where in fairly bad shape. Just something to look at...

Go to Pirate4x4 and read the Toyota FAQ about 1/4 way down is the part on 3rds and gears. Its some great info. Especially on the difference between 4cyl and 6cyl setups.
