88 4runner....I'm not sure what's going on. Driving to get on the interstate the other day and all of a sudden it's like the clutch just wore out at one moment. If you gave the truck to much gas it would rev up like the pressure plate wasn't grabbing. Down the road a little and it corrected itself??? Then out in uwharrie this weekend....truck was acting fine then in the middle of going up a hill starts doing it again...no go!! barely got up it.
I replaced the clutch master cylinder about 6 months ago so it should be good.
What is so wierd is that this comes and goes...it's like the clutch just wears out all of a sudden. Any suggestions or thoughts on this?

Could be the slave cyl getting ready to die.

I'm kind of thinking teh same, sounds liek a really small leak or osmething.
Was the replacement a bona fide OE replacement, or a cheap AZ reman unit?

I just had to replace the clutch master on my rig. The clutch would NOT release. Normal clutch (pressure plate/flywheel) operation is in drive mode. The hydraulics of the clutch pedal mechanism only push the throwout bearing and release the clutch (pressureplate/flywheel). Any issues with the hydraulics (master, slave, clutch line, pedal connection) would produce a non-release situation, not a slipping situation. Sounds more like the springs in the pressure plate going bad to me. Either that or the throwout bearing/clutch fork is adjusted improperly and the bearing is putting just enough force on the pressure plate fingers to slip. I can't see how hydraulic issues would cause slippage. Also x2 on the rear seal, I'd pull the inspection cover and check inside for oil.

x2, its obviously not a hydraulics issue. my guess is that your clutch is in fact worn out and it is slipping when hot. a quality asin/seco clutch kit is not that expensive and is not hard to install

One cause could be the rod on the master cylinder is adjusted to tight no free play in the pedal. When the hydraulic fluid is heated it is expanding causing the system to put pressure on the clutch fork transfering to pressure plate fingers. I really don't see how a bad slave cylinder could cause the symptom of a slipping clutch. Slave cylinder applies pressure to clutch fork disengaing clutch from flywheel, so a bad one would cuase it to randomly engage itself? i don't know why it took 6 months for this symptom to show up if it is the rod length.

Did you resurface flywheel when the clutch was replaced, the clutch is a stepped flywheel if they ony resurfaced one part of the step then it could be that the clutch is already past its wear limit but again this would not be random. If the flywheel has hotspots in it and was not resurfaced it could be a poor mating surface and when the disc gets hot is slipping as it cools it is getting friction back.

My bet is the slave cylinder. My toyota truck did this before and thats what it was
Your the winner!! Changed out the slave first because that was the eaziest and so far so good. Haven't had the problem since...been a couple of days. Thanks for the help.
Now on to the next issue....no rear brakes. I believe it is the LSPV. Anybody have one laying around or know a way to test it?
