I have to put a clutch in my sons 85 22re truck. I called toyota today and they want $260.00 for a new clutch. I can get a new one from Advance Auto for $77.00. What is the reason for the big price difference? Is it worth it? Give me your opion. Thanks, Johnny

Dealer pricing.
I think 85% of the time dealers are going to be more expensive then parts stores.
Also look at summit for clutches and stuff for good prices.

Dealerships make their money off of parts and repairs. That is pretty much the reason for the price difference. I am sure that the Toyota clutch is superior to the Advance Auto clutch, but it would be a hard pill to swallow for me to spend the extra $200.

Unless the motor is making a ton of power, the Advance Auto unit should be fine.

Look at how long that toyota clutch lasted in the truck, I bought one of the Advance Auto clutches and got 2 more free b/c the first and second one F'ed up 3 months after i put them in. Yea they were free but pulling the tranny back is a PITA! IMO, I'd go with the Toyota clutch, you will get mor life out of it. Oh yea I ended up taking the last AA clutch out the through out bearing went bad after about 1 year and a half and put in a Yota clutch, never had any more problems.

I went throught the same thing when I did mine. The dealer was astronomical compared to anyone else. I'd use one from a good parts store like Napa or Carquest over one from AA or vatozone. I know carquest sells LUK and they seem to be a pretty good brand. For the Toyota price you could get a performance one from Marlin or the like. (Not like you really need a performance clutch behind a 22re though).

The thing to look for is the springs on the clutch disc. A cheap one will have 3 springs and 3 rubber cylinders. A better one will have 6 springs.

Luk is who makes GM factory diesel clutches so a good product in my opinion. Sachs makes a good toy clutch, i get mine from worldpac, if you have t-hoff near you they can get it from worldpac. there about $130 for 4cyl, unless you like pulling tranny's don't put a AA AZ clutch in it.

The LUK from Pep Boys is only slightly more than the Advance Clutch, but better quality. It has real springs in the disk, not the poly crap in the advance unit. Just my $.02 That is what i had in my crawler for several years, even with the low gears, and big tires....it held up.

Deff go with center-force!!! I got almost 23,xxx on my AA clutch and she's slipping with 31's and a 22r....it's not worth the trouble taking time off or the truck apart again later to deal with the same problem u have now..and your son get's to brag a lil more about a preformance part :Rockon:lol..good luck
