Im considering doing an engine swap for my 88 Toyota 4x4 truck with the 3.0 V6 & AT trans. I have no clue about what to look for as far as engines go or what all I will need for the swap.

What are some of the better engines to put into these trucks that will make it a reliable DD if needed? How much should I spend on an engine so that I don't pay way too much for one?

To do the swap, what all else is need besides the motor?

I live near Smithfield and Clayton.......so do you folks know of a good place to take the truck to have the work done? Maybe you or a family friend have experience with this kind of work and would be willing to help with the swap. Of course you'd be paid for the labor. Iwould just like to learn as well.

What should I expect to pay for labor as well?

What is the over-all price (estimates) for doing something like this?

supposedly the 4.3 swap isn't bad, and those motors are cheaper than a 3.4

yeah but the 3.4 should bolt right in same mounts and trans (if 5 speed)only thing is that the air intake, battery and the exhaust are on the other side.but then you need to adapt the wiring harnees too the old one.

the 3.4 came out in 95 i think?in the tocomas.but you can fine in the
4runners as well.just start calling junkyards and seach the web you'll find one

thanks for all the info, Just viewed that website and Im very impressed with the kits, wiring, etc. thats available. What is a decent price that the 3.4 engine should go for? Is there a certain mileage to stay away from?

do your research before you jump into anything

you have a whole lot of options available to you as far as engine swaps are coincerned but not all of them are good ideas for a daily driver.

my suggestion is a reliable well supported set up like the 4.3 to a th350 combo since there is an aftermarket support for it.

www.advanceadapters.com I would say give the advance adapter guys a call and find out what the more common swaps are and what the most reliable swaps are. because the cheapest route isn't always the best route in the long run.

one more thing I have a buick 4.1 swap in mine with a r150 5 speed behind it to a conversion plate to the 23 spline tranfer case and crawl box set up. this is what I ended up with after trying to go a cheaper route. I had originally went with the 4.1 buick engine to the stock 4cyl tranny (g52) and broke two of them and two w56's before I got fed up with it. Then I went to all stronger stuff. I had to buy a completly different bellhousing conversion and sell my old one, then had to buy another transmission and then a transfer case conversion plate. In the long run it cost me way more than I had intended, just because I tried to save a buck buy not going stronger from the beginning.

that is why I am saying do all the research you can stand and don't take advice from people who haven't done a swap them selves.

every body has an opinion and a suggestion but in the end your the one who has to live with what you do. so do your research. do a google search on engine swaps for a 1988 toyota truck and do a google search for toyota truck forums and go through the forsale sections looking for swap kits.

I can get you a 5mge for cheap....160hp
