I was wondering if the fj 80s got decent gas mileage at all or

what would be a good toyota that could pull a small popup camper and get decent gas mileage

I beleive the straight 6 in the land cruisers got the worst of the mileage, even worse than the 3.0L. It is a great motor and a workhorse, but not the best on gas, but if you can buy one of them new, then you dont ccare about mileage ;) I think you could do fine with any yota, even the 4cyl, jsut a little slow. I would say the best bang would be a 3.4L in a newer tacoma or 4runner.

FWIW

Don't know about the FJ80 but FWIW

96 Tacoma extended cab 4wd 5speed 2.7 4 cyl Stock.
Experimenting with tire sizes/pressure.
Best was averaging 22.5 mpg with 31x10.50s mostly HWY
smaller tires and it actually decreased.
Usually 20-21ish
That's with very very conservative driving

Flat towed a CJ5 and got 17 mpg IIRC.

Small pop-ups are light. A 3.4 would pull one easily. Heck, the 2.7 would probably be okay. I'd go for the 3.4 as they get about the same fuel mileage as the 2.7 and the extra motor is nice.

Friend of mine has a '94 Fj80, being the geek that he is he has done a final "mileage for the year" spread sheet for all his vehicles His Curiser averaged 14.8 mpg for the year of 2007

Bone stock, no mods or over size tires. his junk is well maintained ( better than mine)

you decide if that is good gas mileage.
