I am tryong to remove the locking hub body on an 88 4runner.
I took the cover and clutch assembly off. Next step in the haynes manuel said to remove the snap ring...i found no snap ring, just a bolt and washer in the end of the axle. Removed the bolt and hub body still wont come off.

I,m trying to remove it so I can get to the nut holding the axle to the wheel hub...replacing the CV boots.

Am I going at this right?

Did you take the six 12 mm nuts and cone washers that hold the hub body on. The cone washers can be a B!$@% to get out but when you do the whole thing will come off. The spindle nut is behind that.

These are the nuts I'm talking about....(although this is a drive flange instead of a hub)

Hope this helps.

No real method to it. I just take a hammer and tap it along the edge. Sometimes they'll pop lose and sometimes they take a little more effort. Good luck.:driver:

leave the nuts loose but ON until you have all cone washers loose, it's possible to shoot one across the room.

THe bolt and washer take the place of the snap ring on the IFS trucks, it retains the axle in the hub.

Do not hit the hub body with a steel hammer, it will deform it. The easiest way to remove the cone washers is a brass punch. Take the punch and hold it on the stud with the cone washer. Give the punch a good whack with a normal sized hammer and the cone washers will pop right out. Repeat, do not hit the studs or the body with a hammer, only use brass.
