I`m in the process of building a solid axle and trying to set the knuckle bearing pre-load. I`ve hunted all over (forums, fsm`s) and so far have read anywhere from 5 -14lbs) I`ve looked at 2 different website FSM`s and one says 4.4 - 5.5 lbs and another says 6.6 - 13.2 lbs.
Anybody know for sure what it`s supposed to be? Thanks

I recently had to replace the inner axle seal & went ahead & rebuilt each knuckle on my '85 4Runner & I followed 4x4wire.com's instructions & they said 12.6 ft. lbs.

With the knuckles on, but no felts or rubbers installed, mount the steering arms as usual. It should then be 12-15lbs. of force to rotate the knuckle from side to side. A fish scale is what I use.

Thanks for the replies.
A few more questions. Who has taken a birf apart? I completely disassembled mine (cage, star, and ball bearings) to clean it. Was a little tricky to figure it out but I got it all nice and clean.
I know that the cage and star has to fit a certain way but I`m having trouble getting the ball bearings to fit back in cage. With the cage out aren`t the balls supposed to fit through the cage holes? I`m having to force them through.
