I learned something new tonight.
I've had a book for about 10 years now, and just now found out that the ORV area trails at Uwharrie are detailed in it. The book is Uwharrie Lakes Region Trail Guide by Don Childrey. The ORV trails are covered on pp. 138-165. It's available from outdoor shops (Provision Company, etc, and many bookstores (find it in the "local interest" section usually).
The book covers all the hiking and mountain bike trails in the Uwharrie region. The ORV area is covered as bike trails, but amazingly is not anti-ORV in stance. Each trail has a basic non-detailed map, mileage data of major features, and an elevation profile chart for that trail.
There's also a good (short) history of the ORV use in Uwharrie, and mention of the closed trails (Gold Mine, Elk Horn, etc).
Interesting...I've never noticed the ORV trails in the book before (but admittedly, haven't read much in the book before, as I pretty well knew the hiking trails there by heart anyway).
Here it is on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Uwharrie-Lake...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231994713&sr=8-1
Disclaimer: I have absolutely no relation to the book or author, other than I own a copy, and the guy pictured on the cover is my buddy Ralph.
