I have just pulled an 198? XJ off a farm. The last owner pulled a few parts to fix his daughter's XJ.

For the price and NO TITLE I think I will make a trail only rig since I now have something to pull it with to the trails.

I have been kickin' this idea around a while and I want a few thoughts for the Nc4x4 crew.

I have the 4.0...but would the AW4/NP231 be a good off road combo?? I have a AMC TH400 that I could use any transfer case.

What could I do for Suspension??
I would like to run a couple of Dana 44's with 36"/37" Iroks
I'm kinda looking for a what works what doesn't on an XJ

Thanks Nc4x4:popcorn:

the aw4 is an awesome tranny. and the 231 is pretty good too. Mine has an AA SYE kit in it. Put a trans temp sensor on the outgoing line so you can keep an eye on the tranny temp and go. I'm running a Rustys kit consisting of 4.5" coils and leafs, 1.75" coil spacers and 1.5" drop shackles and running 36" iroks (with some trimming ;) )

alot of guys run the grand waggy 44's under them, but i'm still running the D30/8.25 in mine with no trouble yet.

good luck with the build and keep us posted on the progress

Yeah I like the Waggy 44's and have access to a few sets

I was thinking 3 link front / 4 link rear but I have no knowledge on a unibody chassis.I guess I would build a subframe and make the trusses off that using the old 70% formula

3link/4link would be really sweet but if you leave the rear leafs it will get you out on the trail quicker... as for the aw4/231 its a pretty good little combo. Like said above, watch the temp on the Aw4 they hate even a little bit of heat. They go forever if ya watch the temp thoguh.

if ya need any help/parts let me know...

I've seen a few 4 linked rears and they work really well. I'm actually wanting to do that to mine one day. We have put rock crawlers 3 link up front on one before and it works really well also.

there are several companies offering unibody stiffeners but I'll probably end up making my own.

i'd say depending on your driving style, any of those combos should be fine. some just more expensive than others.

I think the 60's are a little extreme but if I run across a cheap set who knows....but I would be looking for the higher $$ 60's

But first I need to get the body stripped and ready
