A buddy of mine got a home-made trailer, small 4x6 I believe, liek for hauling a lawn mower or ATV. He went and got a VIN to get it registered, etc. Told now the only thing left is an inspection, then it'll be all legal.

Sooooo.... what are the requirements/things looked for in the inspection? Is this posted anywhere? Can't find it.

Somehow I doubt it's exteremely rigorous.

I think as long as it has working lights and looks safe then they will pass it. I need to stamp the frame on mine so I can get a tag for it......never enough hours in a day.

uhhhh make sure it has two safety chains and good tires

Nice.
So it could be made of bubblegum and Legos, as long as it has lights and chains, and be legal then, huh?

inspection

Technically, all tagged vehicles in NC are required to have an inspection sticker. It is a law that is seldom enforced for tag along trailers. I had my gooseneck inspected a few years ago before a trip west, just to be covered.
The trailer has to be inspected by an official inspection place, just like your car. There are few that are issued (or apply) trailer inspection stickers. It is the same for motorhomes, you have to hunt for them.
