So since me new trailer has a box on the tongue I’ve been trying to figure out a winch mount. One idea was to mount it to the box lib and make said lid stronger. A friend suggested mounting it in the deck with a roller fairlead. So the winch would sit vertical in the deck. The roller would be flush or just above the deck. I thought about an angled box in the deck. So help me figure out the best way to mount the winch I got from @Noel.

I welded in 2 pieces of c channel from the front to the second crossmember. I also welded angle on the front edge of the mount to hold the boards down. I don't like that it's on the deck, but it works for me.

I went with a receiver hitch mount on both trailers so I can swap one winch between the two. Mounting it on the toolbox lid doesn't seem like the best idea IMO.

@ghost

I went to Harbor Freight and bought a winch mount. I matched up holes to a 3/16 steel plate which was larger dimensions (width and depth) than the winch mount which and installed that below the deck.

The upper winch mount and under steel plate sandwich the wood together creating a dispersed anchor for pulling immobile / disabled junk into my trailer.

The winch power supply and grounds were run into my trailer box housing the battery and relay. I added a plug to the side of the box for the winch controller.

The setup leaves maybe a foot of each cable exposed, minimizes footprint on the deck and protects the electronics. Works really well.

I welded a big ass plate to the front of my trailer since I didn't want the winch on the deck; probably how I'll do it on the next trailer I buy too.

How much room is in between the frame rails on the trailer? Maybe cut a hole in the deck and build some kind of flip plate or recess the winch down in between the rails?

Yep, what many of the others said. Find a way to keep the winch in the box if you can. But honestly and more importantly you want the winch mounted as high as you can. I contemplated mounting mine under the deck, but the pull angle is crap, especially considering how hard it’s gonna work against the tilt deck. Stick a receiver mount on it and mount it up high and be done with it. Keep the winch in the box and out of the way when not in use.

I opted to weld a receiver on to my trailer to be able to have my hammock stand or a winch in a craddle. The last picture was before I finished the last few welds and added gussets to connect the 2 by 6 to the receiver. The other great part about having the receiver was when I had to tow a boat trailer on my car trailer. It allowed me to put a hitch in the receiver to help secure the tongue of it. Or if I have to winch my jeep on the trailer I can put my hitch recovery point in it.

I'm with Matt. Is yours a full tilt or partial? Hydraulic or gravity?
Partial gravity tilt. Same as mine was originally. need a roller on the front of the tilt and a way to lock it out. By the time you do all that, might as well add a hydro pump since it’s already a 2 way cylinder. That’s why I ended up where ended up. :D

Partial tilt gravity. One idea I was kicking around was the receiver mount on the front and one in the deck. Use the winch on the deck to get it on the deck then could transfer it to the front if needed. But then I thought that’s too much work….
