My trailer is wired with 7 wires. It has a round 6 pattern with on prong in the center. My truck has a hook up in the bed but it's only 6 prong. 5 and one in the center. Any advise on what to do about this. Can I have all functions working correctly with only 5 prongs?

1 wire left signal and brake light
1 wire right signal and brake light
1 wire tail lights
1 wire ground
1 wire for brakes

5 is all you need.

Some people use the extra wire to wire in auxilary lights(very handy)

The extra two are +12V constant hot (charging trailer batteries, etc) and reverse lights. You can wire it up however you want, but the big 7-pin round connector seems to be most common nowadays.

Easiest solution is to buy an adapter

You could also need back up lights and a constant 12V supply for....

I have a 7 pin on the back for a tag-along. but a 6 inside the bed for gooseneck or 5th wheel

yellow = left
green = right
brown = taillights
blue = electric brakes
white = ground
this works if truck and trailer both have RED turn signals and brakelights

yes the constant hot is to charge camper battery's
the "backup wire" is sometimes used to trigger a solenoid that cuts off the brake line on a trailer that has hydrolic surge brakes. if this the case you back up and the brakes will apply if this is not connected. hope this helps

To keep your winch battery on the trailer charged? Loading lights on the trailer? These are the two reasons I use em.

Well our camper has an electric jack so thats what mine powers....but I left it open ended for all the above.

have to be careful using it to charge a winch. If you leave it hooked up while winching you can melt the wire, and same could happen if the battery is low when you connect it.

also be aware that there are 2 schools of thought in wiring a 6pin trailer connector,

Center HOT ( 12v constant)

OR

Center BRAKE

there are adapters for either, you really need to know what you have

And the same goes for a 7 pin. It can be center hot or center brake as well.

It can be wired however you want it. I borrowed a neighbor's trailer once. He was bragging about how his 7-pin was wired the "right" way. The center pin was ground! Of course, the dude that wired the trailer did the truck, too. I gave up trying to figure out the wiring and adjusting my adapter for it, and towed all day without lights or brakes. I gave it back and never asked to borrow it again!

hahahaha you know, that's a GREAT way to keep "friends" from wanting to borrow your trailer all teh time.
Just wire it real funny so it's too much of a PITA for them...
