My 1996 XJ is having issues taking off from a dead stop. If I put it in drive the jeep will go but it almost feels like it's starting out in second gear or something. If you shift it to first gear and once you get it rolling you can put it back in drive and no issues.

The tranny is not slipping at all and as long as you don't come to a complete stop you can keep it in OD and there are no problems what so ever.

Anybody have any idea what they think this might be? I am going to take it by a transmission shop this week or next and have them look at it. I am not in a hurry to get it fixed because the jeep drives fine the way I described above....anyway let me know!

96 XJ should be the AW4, so shift Solenoid would make the most sense, as Transman said.

I assume its the original but I am not sure. This is my first jeep so I am still learning about them. Is there a simple way to check which it is? How hard of a fix would it be for either of the issues you listed above?

try adjusting your kick down cable, i had the same prob after i went wheeling and if i got stuck it was worse..... try adjusting that at the throttlebody and see if it helps.
