Tranny issue

Alright, this issue I am having comes and goes. I drive my jeep frequently around town, from Concord (where I live) to Harrisburg (where I work) and ill take it to Charlotte everynow and then and I dont have any problems or issues, It even went to mooresville today with no problems. But....if I take it on an extended trip like say to the mountains, the transmission will start acting up. I will be cruising along about 65-70 what ever the speed limit be at the time, and then the transmission will want to shift between 3rd and 4th gear tranny fluid will start leaking out and burning off my exhaust which sends a cloud of smoke behind me forcing me to pull over. The jeep never does this just driving around town, only on long trips or when its under a load like if im pulling a trailer. I had someone once tell me a transmission cooler would help, I havent changed the fluids and filter in a while so I figured that would help out as well. What do you guys think?? Would a tranny cooler help out my situation or do I have something a little more serious going on? Thanks for any advice.

My first guess is you're boiling the fluid. Add a tranny cooler and do a complete flush and filter. Really some more info would help though. How much are you towing and how hard are you running up the mountains? 6 or 8cyl? Have you regeared?

I knew I would leave some important info out, sorry. 6cyl. I was actually easy on the gas in the mountains b/c the transmission had already caused me to pull over more than once. I dont pull a trailer much, but back in November I went to hickory to pick up a motorcycle, the jeep pulled the trailer up I-77 and I-40 fine on the way there, but with the bike on the trailer on the way back when I hit I-77 it started giving me trouble. The bike was a ninja 250 so it didnt weigh but a couple hundred lbs. I have regeared to 4.56s

I think your first step would be to do a flush and filter. Add a cooler while you're at it. It could be a simple problem of the filter/valvebody being partially clogged and it's not circulating enough fluid to hold the correct line pressure to run in overdrive. How many miles does the tranny have on it? If it has alot of miles the clutches might possibly be starting to wear but I don't think so since you didn't say the tranny was slipping at all. I had a Dodge Caravan that all of a sudden the tranny would just kick out of gear. It acted like it was slipping really bad. I dropped the pan changed the filter, flushed all the fluiid out and filled it back up and it is still running and driving just fine to this day. The filter was just really nasty.

I figured the filter being clogged up would be my problem, and I hadnt really paid much attention to the fact that it didnt have a tranny cooler on it until it was mentioned to me to check into it. The jeep has 142xxx on it and as far as I know the tranny is the factory one so Im assuming it has as many miles on it as the jeep. I will get these tasks knocked out and hopefully this will solve my problem. Thanks for the input.

My tranny just went out on my TJ yesterday. 100K miles on the damn thing. good luck with yours

while the pan is off do a band adjustment theirs 1 in the pan and another on the side near the shifter linkage u need to look at a service manual for the instructions . mine started doing stupid things at around 100k then i adj. bands it has 190k on it now

hmmm....well....I did the job Friday, and I didnt adjust any bands, just replaced filter and fluid which needed it bad!! And put on a tranny cooler. Hopefully this will solve the problems I had.
