I just finished attempting to rebuild a 700-r4 transmission and all I have is 1st and reverse......is there any thing that might be causing this, I.E. low fluid, no detent cable, missing check balls, that could be causing this or is the only thing to do take the tranny back out and tear it apart...(trying to avoid taking the tranny back out) any help is greatly appreciated.

Man there aint no tellin now.I mean you need to check that youve got enough fluid in it.Adjust the TV cable correctly,if you have the equipment you could check the line pressure and lastly take the the valve body back apart........Check every simple thing you can first....eliminate the easy fix stuff. If none of that helps......tear it back down. Those 700r's are tricky to rebuild correctly.Did you use a book or video?well good luck, let us know what you find.

he used the book and the video. i just got off the phone with him, it sounds like the vaccum modulator to me. maybe the TV cable or the valve body.

DING DING DING We have a winner ( well possibly) On a 700r4 it is a TV cable, not a detent or kickdown cable. With this cable not hooked up at all, the transmission will shift very eraticlty (if at all) Sounds like a very likely culprit to me..

Someone posted an excellent article a week or two back on TV cables, I will try to find it and link it!

I will not do an injustice by trying to explain the detail this article has...

This should help point you in the right direction...
Good Luck.

I've rbuilt a couple (2 only) 700's and have been lucky (knockig hard on wood) with no issues so far...

I would try the TV cable first then check an make sure you are full of fluid (I know obvious, but K.I.S.S) especially if you did not fill the T.C. prior to install

Good Luck
