Well my tranny in the Z71 is finnaly letting go its got 180xxx miles on it so i'm happy it lasted as long as it did. Anyway, I realize even if i pull/reinstall the tranny myself im gonna be paying a butload to get my 4l60e rebiult, when i got the 700r4 in the blazer rebuilt it ended up costing $700 and that was with me pulling/reinstalling it. I figure since mine is the electronic version there gonna charge more to rebuild. Anyone know how much it usually runs to get a 4l60e rebuilt?

I've been lookin around at all these places that sell rebuilt tranny's online and it seems for only a couple hundred more i can get a 4l80e, then I wouldn't have to worry bout it goin out with me towin stuff all the time. Anyone have any experience/info on swapping a 4l80e into a half ton? I know it'll bolt up but im sure electronics are gonna be an issue as well as a new crossmember probably.

Also, How Hard would it be for me to try and rebuild the tranny myself? I'm sure there are step by step guides out there and it'd be a helluva good thing to learn.

Thanks

I had my 60e rebuild 2 months ago. Mr. Transmission wanted $1150. I ended up going to a place called Ray's Transmission in Concord and got it done for $750. Both of these where with me pulling and reinstalling it. There is a guy called bggrnchvy on fullsizechevy.com that swapped in a 4l80e if you want to contact him.

Here's his swap thread on fullsizechevy. I think he has a more in depth one on another site:

Probably gonna need a new t-case, or at least the input to one (If you're running a 241 or similar now)

rebuilding it yourself isn't that hard, basically pull everything apart, and reinstall in same order with new parts. I did my first rebuild on a 700r4, and it is still on the road to the best of my knowledge. A top quality rebuild kit would cost a couple hundred bucks, and you're gonna want a new converter too, so, about $300 total give or take. I think mine cost me about $175, but I was being frugal. There are a couple of tools you'll need, and everything will be clearly illustrated in a good repair manual. check ebay

That IWANNA add sounds like the guy on ebay whos out on that end of the state. Prices seemed a little lower than the other ebayers.. I had emailed him some time ago about doing a drop off rebuild he had said np.

As far as the swap.. It's very doable in the 94/95s. I do know in the 94/95 you could get 350/4L80e combo in the 2500/3500 they did use a different PCM that had the shifting code for the tranny... I 'think' all the others still had a PCM (vs the older ECMs) Some of the PCMs are pined (wired) differently so at worst you might have to repin your PCM connector to allow you to run the other PCM.

Yea I mean my worst fear with the 4l80e swap is the electrical portions, I still havnt found a clear solution to how it will work, some people say you have to get standalone computers for the 4l80e and others mention something like you said with tieing it into the stock harness. When I get some more time later I'm gonna go through that bggrnchevy guys thread right now I got two exams this afternoon/evening so I got some other stuff to worry bout :shaking:

I'm still trying to figure out how to adapt it to my wiring harness/computer I've found alot about adapting the 4l80e to 96 and up but not the 95 and earlier tbi models.

Also im debating in my head on weather or not to swap in the 4l80e or just rebuild my 4l60e with alot of upgrades. I priced it out earlier and its about the same price to have my 4l60e rebuilt with alot of upgrades as it would cost to swap in a 4l80e.

What do you guys think I aughta do? Swapping in the 4l80e would be badass but this is my DD so I won't have anything to drive while whatever I do gets done and getting the 4l60e rebuilt will probably take alot less time than it would for me to be trying to figure out how to get the new 4l80e all buttoned up.

I would rebuild the 60.

Ricky with your willingness to jump arms deep, you can rebuild this yourself.

I taught myself with a manual I ordered from NAPA (had th350/th400/700r4/4l60(e)/4l80 all in one book) for $50.

Rebuild a 700 parts incl. TC $225....

You can do bench jobs for $500 be the cheapest guy around and make a killing.
So the knowledge could actually make you some money.

They are easy to just rebuild, tweaking takes a little more knowledge

Yea me taking a whack at it myself still is an option Im toying with, Def would save me alot to do it myself.

I was planning on getting this kit if I do rebuild the 4l60e:

#K18. You get a stock Alto 4L60E master rebuild kit, oversize .490" Sonnax Mega Valve, a Corvette servo plus an Alto Red Eagle band and filter. This is the same master kit as #K2 without the Red Eagle 3-4 clutches. What this kit has that a stock 4L60E transmission doesn't have is the Alto Red Eagle band and an oversize pressure valve that is .020" larger than the largest factory valve. The .490" Mega Valve will give your transmission firmer shifts and more holding force on the clutches and band. Fits Chevy 1993-1996 4L60E transmissions. Cost $161.00. SAVE $18.00 HERE !, 10.1% OFF

#K18R. Add a PATC - Alto RedEagle PowerPack in the 4L60E 3-4 clutch. This clutch set comes with 8 RedEagle clutches, 7 Kolene full thickness steel plates and 1 thin backing plate. This is a 33% increase in the clutch apply area. We prefer this clutch pack to the 9 clutch pack because it has full thickness steels and holds up better with higher horse power motors. You must buy the above #K18 Combo Kit to get this price. Cost $30.00. SAVE $4.00 HERE !, 11.8% OFF

As well as
-torque conv from advanced $155
-Deep finned alum pan w/ magnetic drain plug $210
-Large Cooler (hayden 15x10 I think) $55
-External Inline Filter $51
-Tranny Temp guage $60
-Dual Pillar Guage pod $40

So that totals at $787 in parts for the tranny

Do those look good to you guys? Anything you would add? Anything I don't really need? Am I getting ripped by any of those prices?

Thanks

well heck, savin on parts already, is the pan alum finned or just deeper? Also is the plug magnetic? The inline filter, is it ready to be plummed inline and does it need to be changed? If so where do i get replacement filters?

If its all good then Ill prob grab the stuff from you pretty soon cause Im headed back down to Mooresville tommorow for christmas break

Filter: http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/m...B&Category_Code=inline-filter&Product_Count=0
Says to replace it every 12 months or 20000kms (I hate fucking metric!!!), guess you just replace the whole thing.

Pan: http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/m...4104&Category_Code=pan-cooler&Product_Count=1

You can see the tubes running the whole length of it, haven't read anywhere that the plug is magnetic.
Btw, I'm don't have these to sell, I'm just telling you what I paid for them. :) I already have the pan on my truck and at some point I'm putting the filter on.

A couple people have mentoined the fact that even if i rebuilt the 4l60e with performance parts it cant come near to snuff compared to the 4l80e, and I swung by To talk to Andy today cause I was in the neighborhood and he told me the same so now I'm thinkin I aught to do the 1 ton swap.

So far all I've been able to find about adpating the 80e to a 1500 harness hass been for the 96 and up computers which I thought were different than the 95 and before computers since 96 is when they switched to vortec instead of the tbi. Andy said he thought it should be the same? Anybody have any info on this?

sry to hear about your tranny rick especially with you towing my truck around and all.. when the trans housing cracked in my truck a while back i had a guy in wendell(close to raleigh) get a used case for me and swap the internals over and he did it cheap. he works at a transmission place but does a lot of side work from his house. he may be cheaper than anyone else to rebuild yours and hes a good guy. give him a call at 919-365-5467 his name is gary

Thanks man, I saw that the other day but I'm waiting to get an answer back from Andy about if his guy that does all the wiring harnesses can flash my computer for the 4l80e, don't wanna buy the tranny and find out later I can't make it work. But I will most likely grab that one cause the guy that posted on my wanted add won't reply back . . .

swap in a manaul like my sm465 for sale with np205, won't have to worry anymore. $400 simple and no worries.
Other than the fact that he said this needs to be done quickly, this would be a great suggestion.

However, fabbing/installing clutch mounts, pedals, etc. and removing the interior to cut a pass for a shifter and such....then he'd have to deal with speedo issues, and see if his harness needs ATS feedback...

But you would definitwly have teh beef
