I bought a new truck today. It is a 86 3/4 ton chevy. It has a sm465 and 205 setup in it. It runs perfect except it acts like it wants to engage the t-case while driving. It makes awful sounding grinding noise if in 2hi. still makes slight noise in 4hi.I had to put in 4-hi and take front shaft out to drive it home. I was wondering if anyone had heard of this or experienced this or maybe had suggestions to what it is. I was thinking the shift fork inside might be screwed up or something. Let me know what you think.
Thanks
Matt

It is a 205. Tranny has some(alot) chatter to. I am going to put a tranny and t-case from junkyard in it for now. I know a guy in Wilmington that is real good with t-cases he said he would rebuild but 500 for junkyard and probably 1200(couldn't tell me price till he seen it) for rebuild on both so for now I am using junk stuff. I am pulling the this weekend so I guess I'll figure out what that ungodly noise is then.

SM465 version NP205's are the cheapest ones in the world.. I wouldn't even bother with it, just put a good used one in it.

I have heard of the shift fork pads breaking off causing that, fork being bent, but haven't torn into one with your symptoms, it's just what I hear..

yes it is old figure 8 style. I am taking out in about 10 minutes ill know what it is by tonight hopefully.

gears are all eat up inside. It and tranny are on the way to wilmington this weekend to be rebuilt.

I would not rebuild that the thing the gears are going to be too expensive, its junk now, good for an extra case if you break one. I would just put a used one in it. And by the way if you needed either rebuilt i could have done it for you, a bit closer for you anyway.

I don't think he is putting new gears in it he said he had a few other 205's with good gears he would use for parts. I am taking with my gf's dad. He owns a house down there and he gets free gas for his truck from his work(a benefit of running an oil company terminal) so it is no trouble. thanks for offer though.
