im not sure if its the linkage or the tc itself. put its hard to get into 4wh. and then it will come out too. it does great in low.what do i need to check? and if needed how hard to switch out the trans.case? i see there are several on here pretty cheap.

sorry 89 xj on 35's just replaced the rear with a 8.25 and the front is stock. but it was doing it before the axle blew

Check underneath to see if there us any binding in the linkage. Is it full of fluid? Lots of miles on an '89, could be wearing out. Swapping one out isn't that hard at all. I'd be glad to help if you need it.

its not here at my house so i havent had a chance to do anything yet.but there dont seem to be a catch or slot for it when you pull the lever up. so it never really locks anyway.but last time out i couldnt get it in 4hi just wanted to grind.so i played in lo.when i 1st got it, the pin that goes tru the linkage and into the bracket had popped out.maybe its something to do with that.

the linkage is kinda weird...lots of fail points...the problem we had with the shop is the linkage seemed stressed and couldn't turn the bolt that switches the gears....and the bolt seemed jammed...so you could try readjusting it but like i said...jeep linkage sucks and you will probably have more issues....there are a few companies that sell more reliable linkages but a better tcase is a better choice if you plan on a better one anyway
