I have a 1982 4WD toyota p/u and sometimes the clutch fells too soft and grinds when shifting into 3rd or 4th. A friend told is the trans but I suspect the clutch. Any sugestions?
transmission problem?

sounds like a master/slave issue to me..

Yep, agree with Rich, clutch master or slave cylinder. Look for leaks from each and you may also try this:
take some paper towels and remove all fluid from master cylinder. refill with fresh brake fluid. leave top off master and open drain on slave and let
fluid drain. key is to not let master run dry. all that old fluid, probably black in color by now, will be replaced with new fluid. may temporary solve the problem. otherwise replace both cause a new master will doom the old slave cylinder.
