does anyone know if a automatic transmission from a 88 cherokee with the 4.0 will bolt up to a 4.0 out of a 97? one motor is high output the other isnt

it will work, bolt on that is...some software may be different though.

ive got the computer for the 97 4.0. will that make the difference or will it be simply bolting it up and seeing what happens?

Head over to http://www.naxja.org, and search around a bit. Seems like it might work if you have the correct TCU. Switching over the 97 computer might work actually, I know the Renix has extra sensors.

this might be a stupid question, but if you take the tail housing {where the driveshaft goes in} off a two wheeldrive tranny with a transfer case bolt up?

i going to lean towards no because of the length and spline count of the tranny output shaft.
