Tread Wright re-treads on a tow rig?

I thought this had been discussed somewhere, but I couldn't seem to find it in a search.

My '96 2500 Dodge needs new tires. This is a dedicated tow rig, and sees less than 3k miles a year. Due to this I don't want to spend big money on tires, but I also want to be safe.

I need load range E tires and I have been looking at the re-tread tires from Tread Wright. At $100 a tire, you can't beat the price.

So what do you think about these tires on a tow rig?

My brother ran their 225/70R19.5 Load Range F tires on his F-450 and they did great. I would have no hesitations running them

Guy at work has some LR E's on a Chevy 2500, said they sucked - could not get them to balance.

Petersons, or 4wheel Offroad, one of the 4x4 rags, did a test with the tread right tires on their fullsize dodge. Its been a while, bit im pretty sure one of the tests was towing.

They had no complaints.

Don't tractor-trailor trucks and industrial vehicles run retreads quite often? Seems to me if its good enough for them... what's the difference?

i'eve never heard anything bad about TW.

But not on the steer axles, IIRC.

I have worked in the truck and heavy equipment industry for a pretty good while. Most of the treads you see on the side of the road arent from recaps... they are from piss poor new tires made by the offshore (wap o neese:poop:) manufacturers. A good recap is built the same way a new tire is. I still run quality virgin rubber on the steer axles just to be safe.

and yes they do run retreads on the steer. only buss' have to run new tires on the steer axle.

Want to hear a scarey thing? I have it on solid information that all comercial airlines use recaps on thier planes. They take the new tires off and put caps on them from day one.

Like K5 said, they DO run them on the steer axles, only buses are not allowed to run them on the steer axles.

What's scary or surprising about that? Have you seen the flat spots left when they land with full brakes?

I just had a retread come apart on my Excursion. Doin about 85 going up 40 to Raleigh. Destroyed my quarter panel. Also it wasn't a tread wright and was an older HUMMV tire that I couldn't get to Balance. Its going in the shop next year.
