Did not want to clog up the other thread (canoe vs kayak) but wanted to get some ideas on local places to go fish / what to fish, etc.

First of all, is there any good / local forums for this, NC4x4 spoils me in that I really like finding local experts.

What I am thinking of doing is buying a Coleman Scanoe (Canoe with square back for mounting up to 5hp motor)

I like it because it is rated for 850+ lbs of passenger & gear (and I am not a small person) and have read some good comments on it as a great river runner to run upstream and float back down fishing.

So...good streams or rivers to go do that? Closer to Triad the better... just wanted to see what is out there that folks think this would be a good setup.

Near my office is the 3 lakes of Greensboro (off Battleground / etc) and I know they have launching places.

Belews Lake is not too far, bit worried about getting swamped though from the big boats though if I stick to the coves near 150 I might be ok?

Dan River / Mayo, etc? I remember playing on them with my kayak years ago near Stoneville, but not sure how good they would be for "running upstream" first? Any info on their water levels, good places to launch from, etc?

Any other hints are welcomed, I have not done much fishing in life and would really like to get started / make it a hobby. (Things like, say, fly fishing is a good idea or NOT a good idea with this setup etc)

Kernersville Lake is too small / crowded and the fish don't like me. I know it is stocked but I have never had any luck / it is fished ALOT I know...but there is a lake off Biz 40 between Kville and W/Salem, anyone know anything about it?

You can put in at High point city lake. The max motor size out there is 9.9hp so you dont have to worry about big boats. Ive caught several bass in the 6-8lb range out there and the fishing for channel catfish is always good. We usually catch a few nice cats under the penny rd bridge every time we go.

You won't get swamped by big boats in belews, just stay out of the main area and you'll be fine. If you put in off that free ramp off 150, go to the left (facing the water from the parking lot) and you can pass through a small little channel, I've never seen big boats in there just alot of people fishing  Just don't eat the fish there, you'll start glowing in the dark

If you wanna just catch fish there's a stocked small pond at Burmill Country Club, its back past the clubhouse/pool building

You can put in at Morrow Mtn. and paddle/motor across the Yadkin river then up into the Uwharrie river. The fishing is pretty good there and its not really crowded.

The upper reaches of the Yadkin and South Yadkin offer good fishing and are away from the crowds also.

Deep River Park to US 15/501 (5.8 mi)
Park
entrance is on R. Jordan Road at the intersection
of Rosser Road and R. Jordan/Everett Dowdy
roads. Mile 2.7: Old navigation lock creates the
only rapid of this section (Class I). Rock outcrop
just below the rapid offers a rest stop and land
access to Endor Iron Furnace (a quarter-mile
walk along the river bank). Mile 3.0: Impressive
remains of Endor Iron Furnace, visible from the
river only when the leaves have fallen. Take-out
for US 15/501 is river right just below the
15/501 bridge.

I like Ramseur Reservoir too

and lake Lucas in Asheboro is a good one too

here is a good resource

edit: there is also a lake between baden and tillery that is nice to paddle too

Yep, that is the one I am hoping to pickup!! He and I have been talking for a couple weeks now.

Gonna add a Minn Kota motor on the back, couple of batteries, etc. From what I understand I will need to put those up front to act as counterweight/ballast.

My folks live in Summerfield and so I go across Lake Brandt road quite a bit, they have a nice launch there, etc.

Thx for the help folks!!!

Bringing this back from the dead!

How do you like your scanoe? I've got an '86 model that has aluminum rails and seat supports. I've got two flip-up swivel seats and a 4 hp yamaha outboard. It's my mini bass boat.

I also grew up in Kernersville.

Find any good local river floats?

Dude, I got my motor, but never took it out yet!!? I ended up taking up golf this year but I really do want to try this out sometime.

I am thinking I may make a mount for it on my Toyota so I can take it with me to the OBX for fishing on the sound side!?

Get that thing out on the water man!

I took mine to OBX a few times. I don't know much about fishing the sound and inland waterway, so for me it wasn't very fun. Plus, it's very slow going with a 4 hp motor.

I was able to net some great live bait back in the marshes. I've got an 8ft cast net that I can throw pretty good.

I'm more interested in fishing rivers. Have you been on the Dan river? I was looking to float it, just upstream of Eden.

Due to frustration with my recent golf prowess, I've regained interest in fishing.

Shoot me a PM if you ever want to go.

if you ever decide to come "down east", I can guide you on some of the best black water /swamp fishin to be had.Best time to go is spring and early summer tho.
