I was on my way home from the Uwharrie Work Day Weekend and my truck died on the way. Was going 60mph and then it just shut off and I coasted to the side of the road. I spent 3 hours trying to figure out what is wrong with it and gave up. Here is the history of the problem:

For I don't know over a year sometimes when starting the truck I would have to pump the gas pedal while turning the key for it to start. And for a while if I ever let off the gas to coast it would mini backfire/exhaust sputter. I always figured the carb would just need some adjusting.

About a week or two ago I started to notice when I was loosing upper band power but thought not much of it.

The first time I really noticed it was this past Friday night when we rode on Dutch John. The small hill climb right before the main Hill climb it started sputtering and trying to die out. Then on the hill climb itself my first attempt it died out. I have NEVER had any carb issues on Dutch John in the years I have wheeled there. So I took a 2nd stab on the climb revving it up higher and still sputtered at the top but I made it.

Cut to yesterday I was on my way back to the Cabin, and it started to surge. It would sputter/start to die then right before it would get below 2k it would go back up to 3k then sputter/start to die again. It happened 4 times before I stopped the truck, I revved the engine to about 5k and it was good.

Then cut to this afternoon at the campgrounds. I took about 4 attempts pumping the gas pedal and turning the key to get it started. More than I have ever had to, to get it started. At most it takes 2 tries usually. We ride up to the Outpost, eat and it fires right up to leave. I can still feel when I push into the gas that it doesn't want to go faster. Its reluctant to speed up, it hesitates and you don't get the jerk or surge of power that you would usually when pressing down on the gas further suddenly.

So about 40 minutes out from Uwharrie the truck just cuts off and dies. Here is what we did:

- Took the in line fuel filter out and used a bicycle pump to get air through it. Put it back in and it fired right up after pumping the gas a little, but was sputtering. So I revved it and then it died again.

- Went and got a new fuel filter and put it in. The carb looked dirty (with the air filter off of course) so we sprayed some carb cleaner on it. Wouldn't start right off. Took another 4 tries pumping the gas and it started. Was sputtering so I revved the engine, and around 4k it died.

- Tried more carb cleaner. No dice. Took 2 different spark plugs out and grounded them to the block, had spark. Disconnected the line from the fuel pump to the carb and it was shooting fuel on the pump end. Family member (that came to help give a ride) sprayed carb cleaner in the spark plug holes into the cylinder and no dice.

I am at a loss. Any ideas? Maybe the engine was flooded and by some miracle of god I will go back and it will start back up. Anyone with a shop/tow truck etc in that area? I have road side assistance through my phone company, but that only covers so far. The truck is about halfway between Locust and Albemarle.

Wish I could help. Been in the same situation before. Good luck!

Year ? Engine ? Mileage ? Carb ?

You said carb before so guessing external fuel pump. And you mention sorta getting better after playing with fuel filter. Not knowing any history other than what you've posted, I'd put a fuel pump on it. (and new filter just because)

Eli, I just discovered your post... I can bring the truck & trailer this morning, but I will have to be back home by 1:30 pm at the latest to go to a doctor's appointment.

Locust is not all that far from me.

If you still need help call me as soon as possible (I sent you a PM).

that was my first thought as well, but i wouldn't rule out float issues, and the vapor lock, both of which would "self correct" after you let it sit for awhile, like eating dinner etc. But the pump seems more plausible due to how the problem escalated over time.

I've also seen a f*'d up fuel pickup cause similar, erratic problems

I put a new fuel filter on it, that was around step 4. I also disconnected the line from the Carb to the Fuel Pump on the fuel pump side, and it was squirting fuel. Unless that hose is clogged I don't know, because I didn't disconnect it on the carb side due to its crappy location.

I know the carb is still dirty, but I am not a carb guy. Its a weber carb but still.

Specs on the vehicle:

1988 Dodge Raider, 2.6 I4 (40k on it,newish), Weber Carb, 5spd.

I tried push starting it in the grass, but I just couldn't get it rolling fast enough.

I remember I was at a quarter of a gas tank Saturday morning when Don was saying how awful my truck smelled (fuel wise). I filled it up shortly there after, and right now I am down to a 1/4 of a tank. So it could be bad gas.. I don't know. Either way I am going to bring fresh gas if not drain out the old gas.

Well I went back out today, put some fresh fuel in the tank, dumped the old fuel out of the new fuel filter and it fired right up no pumping the pedal or anything. It then died after I got about 100 feet and I coasted right back onto the side of the road. At this point the battery is dead from trying to start it. So Don (Granny) came out and we used a comealong to get it up on his trailer. He towed it down to Matthews to a shop that I have used in the past. I am out of ideas on what it is. It could be as simple as taking the carb off and cleaning it out. I really don't know, and can't miss any more days of work (Today and Tomorrow is the count so far).

A big thanks to Don for coming a long way out of his way to tow my truck to a shop near my home. Thanks to Stevehayden for keeping in touch until Don arrived just in case, and Jason and all the others that have posted ideas. Feel free to post more ideas so I have something to go back to the shop with tomorrow.

Eli, you are very welcome. :)

I would also like to add... I don't know if we have any State Troopers on the board or not, but I would like all to know that a trooper stopped, just as we were getting the trailer lined up to Eli's vehicle, and asked if we needed any assistance. I told him some traffic control would be greatly appreciated as we were very close to the edge of the road, and the traffic was relatively heavy and moving along at a pretty good clip. He said he would be happy to that for us, and he stayed (with blue lights on) until we were finished. The traffic moved along very cautiously in the left-hand lane while we worked. This was definitely one time that I could NOT say, "Where's a cop when you need one?" A big THANX to the unknown trooper! :)

Well the Carb needs a rebuild kit is what we have found out. And of course no one local carries the rebuild kits for the 32/36 DFEV Weber Carbs. So the kit is only $15 but with overnight shipping its going to be $50.

Supposedly these carbs are easy to work on, but I don't know. All I do know is that its not a good thing when the carb is dumping gas out the side.

Don,

Your willingness to ALWAYS help out speaks Volumes !!!

Glad you guys got things done safely!!!

Aw come on John... you would have done the same thing, but thanx for the compliment anyway. :)

Eli, glad to hear you found the problem, and it is being taken care of. :driver:
