Tubing bender/cage question.

I am set to purchase a tubing bender in the very near future, and have decided to most likely go with the tube tek bender out of asheville.

I want a 1.75" 240DEG. die, and from them, this is only available in the 6" CLR

I have noticed this is the smallest CLR available for that size from pro tools as well. This seems big to me, but i assume it is standard? I am trying to fit this cage as close as possible to the roof in my MJ and the tighter the bend the better i would guess.

Is that what everyone uses?

Also, any reccomendations on how much tube i should be ordering to build a fairly basic interior cage on an MJ? figure about the same as a standard cab yota.

With the purchase price of the bender, i am a little strapped for cash, and 3 sticks of 1.75x.120 DOM is all i really feel like spending money on currently, so will this be enough for at least the basics? i can go back and add door bars and such later when i get a little more money.

6" is common die. 'Bout as tight as you can bend 1 3/4" tube unless you have a hi $$ mandrel bender. Everything we build 1 3/4" in NASCAR is 6" rad. Sometimes 8"!

Easy calc. measure height, width, etc. Bends dont make much material difference

eg"
4 foot high x2 = 8 ft
6 foot wide x1 =6 ft
One hoop (rear) will need 14ft! Rest of stick (20 ft stick?) should make the cross bar for a hoop this size

Help?

Thanks

I figured out the rough dimensions like you said, and it was right around the 60' mark. At this point, am am just kind of hoping that i can be very careful with my bends(i havent bent tubing in 6-7 years(and not even much of it, then)) and make sure that i dont waste ANY tubing, or else that will not be enough.

Measure twice...cut once! LOL!

I always cut a cardboard shape of the inside cabside/cab corners from floor to roof. (If both sides are the same the template will work for both sides!)Then measuring the total width I want, I layout my complete shape by drawing it out, full size, on the floor. Then I can easily see where my start of bends are and measure and any angles different from 90 deg. etc..

This is how I did street cars and hobby stock cars. Makes a nice tight cage! I just did my son-in-law's Cherokee. They gotta be tight like your MJ! (I might even still have the templates, I believe!)

hnmm, the cardboard is a great idea. I plan on using the bending 101 methods i saw on pirate4x4 a long time ago to help me with bend start locations and such, but having a template to match on a sheet of cardboard sounds like it will be just what i need, thanks for the tip!

come by the house anytime, and you can see the tube tek in action, it is super nice

I am finished with the lower half of my buggy, starting on the upper half this weekend

I bought the 120 degree die 1.75" x6 it is all I will need, unless you want to bend a full circle

the bending software is a good idea, I learned by trial and error, 2 error bends and I was good to go

You live over there by uglyjeep right??? i think i met you once last year over at chris's house.

I would love to come see the bender before i order, but unfortunately, i work a lot of hours and am rather short on time, and funds for the drive. Thanks for the offer though, if anything changes and i can make it i will let you know, it would be nice to see exactly what im ordering.

glad to hear you are happy with it.
