Seems Im getting around 8 in the city, which IMO seems pretty low. I was thinking more around 10-12, closer to what my TJ got.

SO what is normal MPGs for these? Its a 99.

Mine gets about 14mpg.

The real thing is what mods have been done? If you have bigger tires and stock gears then that's why.

my zj with 3.73 gears a np231 and 30in tires gets about 17 with everyday and minimal horseing around

8 sounds way too low, but to be honest, I havent measured in a while, and I never adjusted the speedo/odometer whne I lifted it and went to 31s. The factory overhead still says 18mpg I think.

It can depend a lot on how tired your engine is, and the over all weight of the wheel tire combo on the XJ's.

I seem to remember my old XJ with a fresh engine, 32s, and stock gears getting around 12mpg city and 14-16 on the highway. Mileage suffered significantly in hilly areas and I kept it out of overdrive often due to stock gearing and larger tires.

Wow, my old stocker 90 XJ w/ 40/auto got 17 city, 19 highway.

Did you adjust for the increased tire size in your calculation?

I have a stock 99 XJ with 178K miles. Still gets about 14 city and 20 highway.

Our stock '98 XJ gets 15-17 around town.

hey man, you might wanna think about doing plugs and wires on it. Also, remember that its got the stock speedo gear and all in it, so it's actually getting a tad bit better mileage than its reading. if your speedo says youre going 70, the jeep is actually moving about 74 mph. on flat interstate, around 65mph, I'd get about 19mpg in it

x2

If not, then your 8mpg calculation is off.

You are traveling further than your odometer is reading since you have 31" tires and stock gears.

My stock 98 with 180K gets 17 average, mix 50/50 city and high way.
I had a hesitation when I would first start mine, put plugs/wires/cap/rotor button and the hesitation went way.
Make sure all the sensors on the throttle body are clean too.
