I am sure many of you already know this method of removing a stubborn u-joint but I just found this write-up today and it worked great...for getting 2 of the caps off and 1 of the shafts, not I am working on getting the other half of the joint out but I am running into the issue of not having enough room to get a good clean hit without hitting the collar that surrounds the yoke on the outter passenger side shaft for a dana 30. I dont want to damage the collar because honestly I have no idea what it is for and don't want to cause more repairs or trouble. Any suggestions?

Here is the link to the write-up

and here is a link to a picture of my shaft showing the collar. sorry that it doesn't show the space I have but believe me it isn't enough to fit any decent size hammer in there without hitting either the collar or the cap, which then won't let it slide out.

nevermind, problem solved. seems they make a tool just for this occasion. it has a 4 1/2" disc that spins really fasy and throws sparks when it touches metal...oooooo ahhhhh

That "coller" is easily removeable for assembling an axle shaft. Replace when done installing a joint.
Just knock it off.

^thanks but i got it all taken care of. went a different route but I will keep that in mind for on the trail since I have a feeling I will bust the other side when I go to Tellico.
