Everyday,on my commute to work, i pass and notice 7 to 8 U.S. flags at schools, buisness, fire dept, churches, and some homes. While they waive gloriously in the wind of our free country i cant help notice, and am saddend by the fact that they are at HALF MAST way to often.

Penny for your thoughts.

thanks

USA flags should be flown at half staff through sunset on the 4/22/07

Honoring the Victims of the Tragedy at Virginia Tech
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

White House News
Our Nation grieves with those who have lost loved ones at Virginia Tech. We hold the victims in our hearts. We lift them up in our prayers, and we ask a loving God to comfort those who are suffering.

As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on Monday, April 16, 2007, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, Sunday, April 22, 2007. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this seventeenth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-first.

GEORGE W. BUSH

I dont think hes saying that they shouldnt be at half staff

I think hes saying that he sees them at half staff way to often.

PLEASE PLEASE dont get the wrong idea about what i meant.

I was simply making an honest, heartfelt, statement about the ''sheer amount ''of horrible events our county has endured in recent times. Not wheather or not the flag should be lowered. Sorry, I may not have been clear enough. Dylan

Dylan, I took it wrong, I thought you meant you didn't know why they were at half mast. My bad, no harm, no foul.

I agree in general about the flags "needing" to be flown half-mast too often.

However, honestly..the VT incident aside,....even though it seems like the country is going to hell in a handbasket, and there are crazies running loose killing people every day....it's really not the case, at least not anymore than it ever was.

IMO, it's just that now, news can travel so fast that it becomes statewide, countrywide, then global in practically a heartbeat.

But there's always been some crazy mom who killed her kids, a drunk dad who killed his wife, etc....we just didn't always hear about it.

Obviously, a mass murder like VT will always make the news, and then the networks absolutely analyze and beat it to death...which, IMO, is almost a crime itself.

But go read the headlines at Fark.com....click the links on the stories, they go usually to local newspapers and TV stations' websites. Then look at the bottom or side for "other stories" and you'll be shocked at how many crazy and terrible local stories are on nearly every site you go to....and if you didn't live there or click that link, you'd have never heard of it.

All very good points. I could not agree more.
Maybe my ''percieved'' increase in tragedies in the last 5 yrs is in some way associated with the fact that in the last 5 yrs I have become married with children. maybe I just notice more because things matter more to me now! OH @$#% I JUST SOUNDED LIKE fRASIER CRANE

^^Having children definitely raised my attention level to other child-related news. I can't hardly even stand to watch a TV show or movie where harm is done to a child now, much less hear real news about it.

I know, my girl is two. The earth revolves around her and all children. Columbine,V.T. These were all someones children. I cant imagine the heartache and hope i never realize it myself.
I would take on armies to save Maycee.

My daughter is 4, my son is 2.

I recently went to the funeral of a friend's daughter who was not quite 4. Couldn't hardly stand it, but couldn't stand not to go, either. I sort of can imagine what they feel, but then again, that's only my imagination...I'm sure actually experiencing it is FAR worse.

I'd also gladly take on anything or anyone for my kids.

I to over the years have noticed the flag being treated wrong. There are right ways and wrong ways to handle our flag.

Once while at My kids high school, I watched the JROTC cadets handling it wrong, I step out and showed them the right way.

Once while outside the Hospital here in MOrganton, I saw the same thing. I got out and showed them how to properly fold the flag.

I guess it's something that has stuck with me from way back when I was a Boy Scout.

I would rather see a child mishandle a flag than see aflag flown at half mast because children have died.

Thats cool that you were able to educate those folks as to how to properly handle OLE GLORY.

Im not sure I know all the proper procedures myself.
