My 98 K1500 5.7 vortec cranks just fine idles fine for a few/5 mins. Then the rpms drop to about 500 and it misfires shakes in drive, in neutral it's pretty smooth. I can smell gas in the exhaust at idle. The service engine light came on the next day when I cranked it and I have 2 codes, p0174 and pO300.I'm gonna check the plugs tomorrow. If anyone has any advice about troubleshooting I would appreciate it.

The P0174 code is where I’d start. If the MAF is misreading it’s telling the engine to fuel it de-fuel the truck in the wrong direction.

I found something on u tube about maf on the 5.7 VTK.I took the maf apart and the screen and the sensors were pretty clean.I cleaned the sensors w alcohol on Q tips, not much color on the qtips a bit of gray and no color when I finished.I replaced the rotor and cap on the dizzy and no change.I'm thinking the oem spider has broke a leg.

The engine is running lean on bank 2 when it goes to closed loop (after warm up). It stumbles in drive because the A/F ratio is off. The clue you get is the general misfire code telling you that all cylinders are not firing correctly. That is not a MAF issue but a fuel or spark issue. If the MAF was the issue I would also expect a P0171 and/or bad open loop driveability. Considering the injector type on that engine I would zero in on that as the probable issue.

Its not too bad to put a spider in. My '99 broke a leg and I put one in it years ago. They offer single legs now but I have not messed with those. Mine had a P0302 that I could not move around with plugs or wires but same compression on #2 as all of the rest.

Those redesigned spiders are much better than the old stock ones. It takes a little to get to them but it's not too bad. Also put your hand at the exhaust to see if it's really hot, your cats could be clogged and throwing the computer off. And don't forget that plugs, wires, cap, and rotor don't last forever.

I got this off a obd II...

Holy gawd damn gap, dude.....unless that's the camera playing tricks. What were those plugs gapped to?

I wouldn't sweat the coolant tank yet. Are you talking about the reservoir? If it were burning coolant in the chambers, you can usually smell that. Smells kinda sweet. But it is weird that the plugs from one bank vs the other are completely different looking.

A friend told me to clean the egr, it was not stuck and not caked up, I cleaned it and it wasn't that dirty.Found out the battery was shot.Got a new one and checked the fuel pressure at the rail.60psi w the key, cranked it and it ran like shit for 10 secs. while the gauge dropped to 57/58 a search said they need at least 60 to open the injectors.Got a new GM pump coming next week.
