Well, I avoided it as long as I could but the salt is inevitable. What should I be using to coat my body and frame to help protect it from salt?

I can pick up this Rust-Oleum product locally from HD.

FWIW probably 98% of the underbody is sprayed with something that the PO used. But not all of it.

That shit just collects and holds moisture against the metal. If it does anything at all, it accelerates corrosion.
That's what I was worried about. I saw someone mention something to that affect on another thread and couldn't quite remember.

That cavity wax stuff looks fine for inside the frame rails and in body cavities, but is it good for wheel wells? Of course their "Rust Preventer Spray" isn't for consumer sale.

Fluid film is what I would use. No way in hell I'd spray undercoating on one, it'll just hold moisture and accelerate rust.

Tried to link an SMA video but it kept linking the wrong one 🤷🏽‍♂️

Edit: and of course now it works 🤦🏽‍♂️

Correct answer is to gift me the CJ8 and I’ll keep it out of the salt and moisture

Cool. I'm assuming that stuff is similar to the 3M product.

So I guess my next steps will be to break out the good ol' wire wheel cup brush and AC drill, knock any crap off and hit it with some paint, then treat it with either of those products. Of course I need it to be warm for that since my garage doesn't have heat.

NO!

Get in there with an air nozzle and knock all the debris out, then hit it with the wax spray.

Fluid film will work too, but it doesn't last as long. You need to reapply at least once a year.

Edit: The stuff I have is 3M 08892. Works well down in flange cracks, body seams, etc.

No? I was going to get rid of all this surface rust and old flaky paint and apply some rust preventer paint.

Cavity wax is amazing stuff. Lots of European cars use it from the factory. I think my buddy said some of the Mercedes and BMW cars have as much as 6 quarts in them in various places. You'll notice they don't rust in the same areas as a lot of domestic cars or truck will.

You can fill up the rockers of a 99-07 classic GM truck and they won't rust, if that's any indication of how well it works :D

If you're talking about the CJ, you need to park it in the winter. I thought you were talking about something more modern.

Nope. It’s my daily 🤷‍♂️
It's going to rot away, All those little pinch welds are unprotected inside. Back then, they didn't coat the metal the way they do now. If you can get to the top side of the pinch welds and pour a wax coating down inside, it will help, but it won't be able to get into all the crevices and keep water out. Look around up there - not uncommon at all to see modern vehicles that are 5 years old with bubbles in the rockers and wheel wells. By the time they're 10 years old, the cab corners, rockers, door bottoms, etc, are all gone. Older trucks would rot out at the pinch seam where the quarter panel lapped over the inside bed panel at the top of the bed rail. Ten years of winter driving and the whole quarter panel would be flapping in the breeze.

Just bring your ass back down here and find a rust free hoopty. Consider it a “life expense”, throw it away in 2 years and repeat. DO NOT throw away that scrambler!!
