Well about 3 weeks ago a customer came in with a TJ that was running rough and had a check engine light on found a cyl1 misfire code . the jeep only had 60k on it so I asked him when and if he had a tune up he said never and he only drives it on the weekend . So we went ahead an put new plugs and coil boots on it . well it was still missing on number 1 so I checked the injector pulse and the kv on the number 1 cylinder all of it checked out good . well after some in depth investigation .I found the intake valve on Number one cylinder was not opening .Well the cam lobe on that cylinder was completely worn off and the bottom of the lifter on that lobe was completely worn down to the spring .He told me he took it to the Dealer and they told him it needed a engine . Well tomorrow I should have it done and ready for pick up . I did find it odd to wipe a cam at 60k on a 4.0

I do a ton of 4.0 cam repairs at my dealer. The reason? Crappy oils nowadays with not enough Zinc.
Remember, that ground up cam lobe went somewhere. Like cam bearing journals and main bearing journals. Be mindful of the possibility of needing more repairs down the road (low oil pressure)

Good deal bro. Be careful- pop off the oil pump and inspect the gears closely. If you see any accelerated wear then you should really, really consider bearing inspection and/ or replacement.

Big chunks of foreign material will stay in the pan and be no more than a paperweight. Little, powdery flakes are so, so destructive.

Good luck with the repair man.

around 60K I found metal in my oil pan on my 99 Grand 4.0. Did a complete check on the engine, compression, leak down, scope, etc.. Never could find the problem and the jeep had plenty of power until i sold it at 89K.... these later 4.0s leave a lot to be desired.

Does all Rotella have high zinc or is it only certain weights? I've got a 351 with a flat tappet cam in my boat. I run Valvoline VR-1 Racing Oil in it right now, but I suspect Rotella is a better oil.
