War Eagle

WAR EAGLE !!!! !!!!

Class of '02, wife is class of '03.

Wanted to go, but the trip was going to cost $5k.... probably worth it.

Really wanted to go there for industrial design, couldn't afford the out of state tuition.

Didn't do much research on the history of the school, so I gotta ask, whats with the War eagle?

They actually have an Eagle on campus.....not sure the importance of it, i'm sure my grandfather told me a million times growing up and going to Auburn games, but i have no clue now.

i went to a LOOOT of games in the Stephen Davis era....and always was told stories of him going to vet school there. from the 3 Stooges prank, to the dean's car on the roof, to meeting my grandmother at the corner drug store (i forget the name of it), to putting methelyne blue in the girls food because he worked in the nurse office to all kinds of other stuff..

i always wanted to go, and had OOS tuition handled since i have so many relatives down there...but just never did :(

If i remember correctly (and there are a ton more knowledgeable than me on the subject I am sure)...

AU has its roots as a military college, like many land grant southern universities. Their platoon was the fighting eagles since Fighting Tiger Battalion was already taken (by Clemson) so even though the college mascot remained the Tiger the military battalion became the Eagle.

Side bar kinda funny store that some may not know. Or at least funny to me as a Clemson grad. The design architect for Clemson and Auburn was the same and he basically duped both schools/states into paying for the same design. Hence why you will frequently hear them call Clemson Auburn with a lake and conversely Auburn is Clemson without a lake....but even further tieing the two schools John Riggs founded football at Auburn and after 3 years he was fired/dismissed whatever. So he moved down to Clemson and founded their football program (allegedly because of the campus similarities) Riggs was given/borrowed/stole (depending on whose story you believe) Auburn practice uniforms which were their old game uniforms. Of course Auburn's colors were, as they are today, dark orange and navy..but once the unis are washed a couple hundred times in 1890s detergent, the orange lightens up and the navy looks purple. Riggs founded Clemson's football program and did very well until a young assistant named John Heisman surpassed his knowledge and Riggs stepped down. Later on Clemson's Death Valley Memorial stadium was constructed and the soccer team inherited the old football field where they still lay today, Riggs Field.

Rant on

I'm just glad to know that you can buy a player (not proven that Auburn was involved...yet, but what can the NCAA really learn in a one day of investigating?) and win a national championship...yeah war damn eagle, enjoy it for the next 3 years the NCAA will come and take it away...you might want to talk to Southern Cal people about how they are dealing with their lost.

I am in full support of boosters giving money to colleges but do it the right way, for example Phil Knight gives a ton of money to Oregon but the money benefits all student athletes and students.

News article: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20...berg/01/06/oregon.knight/index.html?eref=sihp

I also have issue with the NCAA lack of balls, they don't want to be the "reason" for the out come of a game, i.e. Ohio State having 5 players supend for next season and not the bowl game???? Doesn't make sense to any moral person, if you break the law now you don't get to wait till next year to do your time. In the same sense, there was and still is a question about Cam Newton's eligibility, if you get pulled over and there is a question if you are drunk or not, you go to jail and then get your day in court to prove you were not.

Rant off

The NCAA cleared Newton already. You can argue that they turned a blind eye, you can argue the dad did it he didnt know bs argument, but you cant argue that the investigaton is on going. Newton has been cleared and AU was assured of no repercussions of playing him.

Do you have evidence to support this? Yes the NCAA cleared Newton to play at that time due to "lack of evidence" at that time but to think that the NCAA is not continuing to investigate the Newton's and Auburn is down right foolish...Like I said ya'll enjoy it for the next three year...

This made me laugh a little...

Them being suspended next year will def. take them out of the National Championship hunt unless they line up five easy teams in the beginning of the year.

Tattoos and autographs are a fair trade, I scribble on this for you and you scribble on this for me. I don't see any problem with student athletes making money off of themselves when the school and NCAA are making money off of them just the same.

Sure...I am on a phone posting so linking is tough.
but go to "the plains are burning" article that has been the primary source of info through this whole deal. It's clear there and has a copy of the NCAA letter sent to AU.

Now to be 100% fair no repercussions can come from playing Cam in the Bama, SEC or NC game. He was cleared for those games, he could later be found ineligible for previous game and AU could be forced to forfeit those. But not the last 3. Therefor the BCS trophy will stay in Auburn.
