It should work without a ground wire through the frame, however, there is a noticeable loss in performance. I used one of the screws on the exposed end of the motor for my ground wire.
There should be a hole for a bolt in the middle of the motor case - that's where mine hooks. You may have an older motor without that provision. In that case, use something else.
Thanks guys, mine is the older style with the flathead bolts on the side of the motor. I guess I'll connect the ground to one of those reeeeally long bolts.
Should I go to the battery with the cable or should I go to the frame or winch mounting place?
It works fine without a ground wire I guess since it grounds to the winch plate/frame like you said. I just didn't want to risk damaging the motor on the winch without proper grounding.
I ran it to the frame. My battery is in the rear. I always assumed frame grounding was sufficient, but when I started working here at Volvo Trucks, I learned an interesting fact that Cummins requires us to run the negative cable from the starter directly to the battery. It cannot be connected just to the frame. Anyone know if they require Dodge to do this on the light trucks?
